My wife hates it when I do it but, I have had similar situations and point blank asked, after calling a manager over, if the 20% is something back to me or, is for the waiter/waitress who after dropping off our food, was never to be seen or heard from again even when our water and coffee needed refilling.

Once I even continued and recommended the manager consider calling in a missing persons report on the employee cause I certain the establishment would never allow a disappearance like this by such a wonderful employee to unreported. After all, there could be a medical condition going on in the backroom - with another employee - right at this moment.

Takes the wife a few weeks to go on another outing with me and when she does, I get The Warning.

I tip bartenders the same as wait staff. But then I usually order a drink(s) they have to make and see them make it, and may order food as well. Usually bartenders are good at customer service and the good ones are also personable and entertaining.

Counter staff are paid minimum wage or better, and should not be tipped. Wait staff and bartenders get paid a pittance wage and depend almost entirely on tips.

The question here is if the people at the counter are legally considered bartenders or not.

Hife wanted a Starbutts Mochafrappa thing this weekend, went through the drive through and they have the tip/card/applepay device out on the drive through counter.

You can't scan until you select a tip, and you don't have your mochafrappa drink yet. So you have to provide a tip for service you haven't received.

The simple way to defeat this is Cash, keep $50 or $100 cash on you to use anywhere you're prone to be attacked with an auto tip.

It's psychological warfare, put forth by credit card companies and processors to increase the total take by an average of 20%.

I have a PT job driving a van from hotels(4) to the airport. Some of my compensation comes from tips. Some people tip the driver, some don't. If I expected a tip every time I picked someone up, I'd be unemployed. My tips run from $1-$2 (normally) to $20 (highest tip). I don't expect a tip, but it's nice when I get one. Everyone gets treated the same, tip or not!

I appreciate hearing that, Odin.
I usually try and tip. We recently stayed at a vrbo and I typically leave a tip for the maid/housecleaners. In this case, I did not. We were provided no garbage can for our room, or our bathroom, the sheets were stained/not washed, towels were not clean, other guests discovered vomit in their bed, beer cans were at the bottom of the hill (part of the scenic view they hoped we’d overlook?). I could go on, but that in itself was enough for me to say no. I hesitate to leave a neg review because this will all be easy to correct, and overall it could be a lovely place. I’d prefer to speak to Mngmt.
