Knowing Walmart, I'm sure they've done a study and weighed the cost benefits against the savings before changing a long standing system

Exactly. 100% self-checkout may allow for slightly greater shrinkage (petty theft), but if so, the savings in employee pay and benefits likely offsets that.

In addition, Wal-Mart is a leader in loss prevention advancements. For one, you're on camera the whole time, from multiple angles. Wal-Mart has some of the best security camera systems in the industry. Also, the self-checkout kiosk system is pretty touchy when it comes to possible theft. If you move something from the conveyer/basket directly to the bagging area without scanning it, it calls you out. Also, if you wave an item in front of the scanner without actually scanning it, it calls you out too.

So I imagine it's pretty tough to fool both the cameras and the kiosk at the same time.

There are ways to look as if you are scanning the item when you are not. Eye in the sky suppposed to catch that. The casinos have the best cameras and surveilance. Everyone is watching everybody and everything is recorded. Walmart is not quite on that level yet.

You do realize that Walmart cameras are not monitored locally ? Everything , including the air conditioners are operated from Corporate .

What Walmart cannot handle is a group of fifty people who all bypass the register at the same time. This is why our local Walmart closes at eleven pm. The packs were coming in late at night when there were limited associates.

I don’t get groceries but once every few weeks, so I hate self checkout as I will have a full cart. No way can I handle all that myself in a timely manner and bag it up too. Plus they always mess up. Even the few times I only got a few items, I nearly always had one item not scan right.

Our Wal-mart has regular and self checkout, I always go to the regular cashier as I think it might keep a job or two by doing so.

Agreed. Screw standing in a line three deep waiting on other customers, just to scan your own groceries.

I like the newer Neighborhood Markets that have several staffed lines and about a dozen register stations without the conveyors.

I've really started to avoid Walmart, there's only a few things I go there for. Unfortunately almost all of them you can't self check out with "assistance". Getting someone's attention to do that usually takes about three times as long as normal check out or self check out. Roll Eyes
