First world problems, I know, but who in the hell designed the HP USB-C Dock G5?
The dock itself is a nice, compact square design. The problem is that while the power cable to the dock runs from the back, where all of the primary display, USB, and LAN ports are, the fixed USB-C power cable to the laptop comes out the front.
There’s literally no way to arrange this thing so that I don’t need to have multiple cables running out of both sides of the box to my laptop. Hardly efficient cable management or aesthetically pleasing.
I’d replace it with any number of other docks (Dell even makes a nice one), but this is a work laptop, so I can’t do anything with unapproved drivers or other software installation. I might try one anyway, but this HP design is stupid. I’d love to see a pic of one in action that looks sensible.

My last large employer was a Dell office. They were much better than HP, IMO.

It's pretty much all I know anymore. Been a Dell user for the last 15 years. Makes it less fun when some equipment comes with something else. Last was a Lenovo desktop that we didn't get to spec out.
most docks now are plug and play, not needing their own special drivers.

We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. I work in an HP environment, and I really don't like the cube docking station either, but I do consider them an improvement over the older style docking stations. Multiple style of laptops can use the same dock.

I was just bitching about this same abomination today. Now you have to have 6 inches of cable sticking out the side. Or, buy a 90 degree adapter and block a bunch of ports.
Shit design.
Don't weep for the stupid, or you will be crying all day

I don’t need any more ports. I use the two DisplayPort ports and a USB port for my keyboard/mouse receiver, the power cable comes nicely out the back as well, but then I’m stuck with this heavy gauge USB-C cable sticking right out of the front to which the laptop has to connect. It’s a waste of desk space and just looks fugly.

A 3mm wide cable plugged into the side of the laptop takes up too much desk space. Really. Tell me, what do you need that desk space for exactly? If the cable is too long, coil it up and wire tie it. If it's still taking up too much desk space try looking into a bigger desk.
