SIGforum has a mechanism that makes it easy to include the name of the member being quoted. Why not use it?

If you use the highlight & quick reply function, the above is what the quote looks like. It does not capture the poster's ID.

Here's my typical method:

If I'm responding directly to a member's original words/thoughts, I'll quote it with the name of that member, attributing that quote to that member in my response.

However, if that member simply posted the text of a news article or posted a quote from someone like a politician/celebrity/etc., and it's not that member's own words/thoughts, I typically won't include the member's name when I'm responding to it. Because I'm not responding to that member specifically, but to what the journalist/politician/etc. said.

In addition, if I'm pulling a short sentence or blurb out of a member's post just to highlight something specific or go off on a slight tangent that isn't directly related to the overall gist of that member's post - typically to inject some historical context like the good little history nerd I am - then I won't include the member's name, because I'm not responding directly to that member.

If you are only wanting to quote a small portion of the total post, highlighting and clicking reply is the easiest, as you don't have to edit out the parts you don't want to quote...which can be a huge PITA on a touch screen. Unfortunately, doing it this way does not include the original poster's username.

I will also add quoting a message without adding any response just the quote. I see this on occasion. What's the purpose of doing this?

This is one of my pet peeves, and 'some people' do this ALL the Time...NOT pointing the finger at you '92fstech'. Wink

Anyway, there is a 'Reply with Quote' button for a reason. It also allows other members the ability to easily find the full context of what what's actually being quoted, even if the quoted text is edited down to a small phrase. If whatever is being quoted, isn't even on the same page, searching for a small phrase in a multi-page thread likely isn't happening for many (most?), often times we're all left wondering what you're talking about.

Of course, many it seems, never proofread ANYTHING that they post either, sometimes not even a cursory glance! Roll Eyes

Same here, makes editing easier and sometimes you want to address the comment in general vs the person, so not including the posters name is a way of excluding them personally.

^^^Sometimes yes, but there are regularly a myriad of posts containing "quotes" that don't even remotely meet any of those defined circumstances, or even the intent of the stated justification(s).

If quoting directly below a post that has a paragraph or so, I will copy the "snippit" as P250UA5 did, to provide context to what the reply is directed.

If it is several posts separated, I will do the same thing but also include the poster's screen name.

I try not to quote an entire reply unless the meaning or context would otherwise be lost.

“SIGforum has a mechanism that makes it easy to include the name of the member being quoted. Why not use it?“

Maybe the people who do it this way read the forum and post replies using a cell phone. It’s quicker and easier to do it this way, on a phone. Sorry if it inconveniences you.

Maybe the people who have this irritating habit use a cell phone to read the forum, and post replies to threads. If they have fat fingers, trying to use the “quote” button provided in forum software frequently results in accidentally hitting the “report post” button. It’s quicker and easier to highlight just the section of a post I want to quote as a copy/paste on my phone screen.

Virtually all of my SIGforum posts are from my iPhone 12 Pro. I’ve never had the least difficulty using the handy quote button.

I’m old, but I don’t have fat fingers. Smile
