I have a row of rhubarb crowns about 20 feet long.
Every Fall I dig around all of them, sift out about 3 bushels of quack grass and assorted weeds, hill them up and mulch them.
Every Spring, I lie to myself that I'm going to keep up with the weeds this year so I don't have to spend a couple of hours on my knees and a couple of days hurting every Fall.

Johnny 3eaglesDo you split the crowns and replant?
Wait...20 feet, you must have tons of rhubarb pies

Yup, I started years ago with two crowns. I have 7 now. Two of them could stand to be split again but I'm up to my ass in rhubarb as it is.
I like rhubarb sauce just plain. We freeze a crapload and make sauce at least once a month.
The fresh stuff goes for rhubarb crumb cake. It's beyond delicious!

Yup. For a year or two. Then the weeds grow up through it anyway and it's a cast iron BITCH to remove.
Earlier this Summer I got hired to help reclaim an old garden spot the customer wanted turned back into lawn. There was an area about 40x60 covered with that shit. We (The landscaper that subbed me the job of leveling the spot) didn't know that until it was wrapping up in my rototiller. We tried a few things and came to the conclusion that the easiest way was to till until it clogged the teeth on the tiller, cut it all out, rinse, repeat.
I have one hard and fast rule: Paul does NOT get off the tractor. Landscaper's guys were cussing up a storm before we got it all...
