I've used a phone app called "Fuelly" for several years to track mileage on all my vehicles. When I traded phones and transferred the data, the nice folks at Fuelly also updated the app. Cool, but... The "new improved" version doesn't allow local storage of data. Everything is saved to The Cloud. That, in and of itself, is not a deal breaker, but the MASSIVE uploads are killing my data limits and it backs up every stinkin' day. Even if I log out of the app it still tries to link up, spiking my data usage. Fut dat. Shitcanned the entire app and downloaded a new one that says (for now at least) that all data is stored locally. We shall see. And fuck the cloud... Be careful when following the masses. Surprised they don't have a setting that you can restrict uploads to when you are on wifi for such occasions as your data plan.

Never knew fuelly had an app. I've been using the web-based version for years. The Enemy's gate is down.

People still have data limits?

Well, I assume so, but you know how "assume" works. I get warnings when I approach 2GB in a month. Be careful when following the masses. Sometimes the M is silent.

Which is an incredibly low data cap for a smartphone user in 2026. To put it into perspective, that's the equivalent of about 20 hours of basic low-intensity web browsing alone per month, roughly 40 minutes per day. Or about 2 hours of video streaming alone per month. That's not including any other activity or any other data usage by any other app throughout the month. You can get unlimited data cell phone plans for <$30 these days. If you want to use modern smartphone apps (nearly all of which involve regular data usage), or really to use your phone for anything besides strictly calls and texts and the very occasional weather check or map directions, I would look into one of those. Or if you don't want to change to a different plan, you could set your phone up to only allow apps like that to access data when you're connected to Wifi. But that will render some apps unusable when you're not on Wifi.

I didn't know they offered non unlimited plans anymore. I have been using Fuelly since 2015. Not minority enough!

Many companies don't, though I bet they still have some customers that are grandfathered in on old low data plans dating from years past, which may be the case here.

Holy shit! I honestly don't see how that is workable for a modern smartphone. Even if you aren't screwing around on YouTube like most folks do, so many apps now use cloud-base BS, as you are now dealing with. After you hit 2GB, do you just get throttled back, charged more, or cut off? ________________________________________ -- Fear is the mind-killer. I’m having a hard time understanding how ongoing mileage data could possibly result in large amounts of data. Miles per gallon per trip, or are they transmitting mpg every hundred yards of travel? Sure they’re not uploading other stuff on your phone in addition?

that warning is a setting built into android from ye olden tymes, check with your carrier but if you have any kind of data cap, you really should upgrade your plan to something both cheaper and modern. _____________________________________________ Proverbs 3:31 "Envy thou not the oppressor, and choose none of his ways."

I'm on my daughter's plan, checking into the data thing, I'll post back when I find out. EDIT She says it's unlimited. Learn something every day if you're not careful... Be careful when following the masses. Sometimes the M is silent.

We're on Mint Mobile and have unlimited data, but ... after some amount we are potentially down-prioritized on the network which can slow cellular data. I get a notification if I get near to that limit, which has happened a few times close to the end of the month.
