That was 40 years ago and I still shoot DAO .

I'm sure that's good training for an LEO, but I'm just plinking. To extend my arm and cock and fire six times
at tin cans is just fun! Every day is not so serious.
It's also good training for personal defense . And if you can't cock your revolver , what's your alternative ? You said you love revolvers .

Even if my thumbs worked I wouldn't carry a SA revolver for self defense. It's just target shooting, I can use two thumbs to cock it.
It's just aggravating, it will eventually ruin my other hobby.

I work in hand surgery. If it is cmc ( carpo-metacarpal arthritis) there are things we can do, injections, arthroplasty which can give you restored function ( temporarily for inj3 tigons permanently for surgery)

Thank you captain. Over the years every General Physician said I have the type that can't be cured, Rheumatoid? The last joint on my fore and middle fingers are bent.
There is a place 5 minutes from me that the doc fixes the MLB pitchers arms, they fixed my sons knee. I turn 65 this year, maybe I should have seen a specialist years ago.

Have you tried wearing Tommy Copper compression gloves? I was experiencing joint pain in my thumbs when riding my motorcycle and the pain made it very uncomfortable to ride so I was afraid my riding career was coming to an end. I ended up trying the TC compression gloves and they have worked wonders for me and extended my riding career. They're only about 25 bucks or so, so a small investment in dollars that could payoff.

Clear back in the 1900's there was a revolver hammer that could be purchased to replace the o.e.m. hammer.

The spur was shaped a tiny bit larger and hooked a bit.

Not a lighter spring.

Are you using a one-hand or two-hand grip when shooting revolvers? I shoot two handed and use the thumb of my support hand to cock the revolver. It's a more natural motion and I get more leverage on the hammer that way.

Damn, sorry to hear of your troubles. Wish there was any kind of cure for arthritus. I bet a lot of us have it. I have the crooked finger thing as well and it's not getting any better.

642 is perfect; my wife's gun, as her hands are too weak to cock a revolver also.
Hammerless design.
No, this is NOT a gun for 25 yd target shooting, but at "normal" defense distance, it will do just fine...

I had to replace my Model 36 with a Glock 43 and a Walther PSM.

I prefer a wheel gun for simplicity but I can't pull it through anymore, even with lighter springs.

I feel for you op. I am the same way. My thumbs are getting worse to the point I have a hard time opening bags that have a tight seal.

Too funny. Well, not really! I hand my son jars to open for me.

I used to have that problem. Until I stayed with my Nephew and his wonderful wife over a Christmas holiday. She is no an NP but was just an ER nurse at the time but she is a very observant gal. One day she told me that I needed to do something about my Sweet Tooth because refined sugars are bad for both the Heart and Arthritis because it is so inflammatory. As a result I cut out things like donuts, cake, waffles, pancakes, jelly beans and similar foods very high in sugar out of my diet. It wasn't easy but the benefits are HUGE.

I had Arthritis in the Radial Heads of both wrists, the basal joint of both thumbs, and trigger finger of the middle finger of each hand. It was so bad that just signing a check was quite painful. Four years later I have zero pain in the wrists or thumbs and the trigger finger in my right hand is gone and the left hand finger only locks up if I close my empty hand and squeeze. Basically reducing my intake of Sugar to the greatest extent possible has cured my Arthritis.

Point is there is a cure for Arthritis but you won't hear it from a Doctor, they are trained to push drugs. It's also not easy or fast. Because you have to train yourself to walk aways from that donut a coworker brought in, that bag of jelly beans, or a stack of waffles for breakfast and do it for years. However make the commitment and stay with that commitment long term and the benefit is much better health and a lot less pain.

I've stopped counting.

Beretta makes the model 86. It is a .380 but it has a tilt up barrel that you drop one in the pipe and shut it. No need to rack a slide. I hope you get some relief. Arthritis sucks.

Do you need to hand-cycle the slide to clear a malfunction?

they are not hammerless, it is just that the hammer is internal, like a 1903 or 1908 Colt Auto,

Even if it is rheumatoid we do have things we can do. Go see a hand specialist not a general orthopedist. Look up cmc arthroplasty for your thumbs. There are several techniques that are effective. The other digits are more challenging, as there are fewer treatment options

I am teamed up with a great hand surgeon, and both of us are gun people. Makes for a nice day doing side bar conversations about shooting and reloading when not focusing on surgery
