First there is Apful (aka Apple Inc). My son died almost 28 months ago. We wanted access to his iCloud accounts. Everyone but Apple played nice with California Probate law. They insisted on a Court Order. And at the last minute they demanded proof that my son would have freely shared his text and email data with me. We met that challenge and a Court Order was finally issued over 5 months ago.
Apple's Legacy Team is staffed with incompentent insensitive dimwits. They continued to address me as my son and even sent emails to his long defunct addresses intended for me. At least my attorney got copies so I was made aware of this. There have been many speedbumps including their mandating we close his ApplePay account which we didn't know he had...It had a whopping $0.08 in it. There's a LOT more but I'm sure at this point you get the picture. We still remain hopeful that access will eventuate in the next few weeks.

Then there's a neighbor bordering my backyard. My yard slopes steeply upward and has a fence that the previous owner installed about 8' short of the property line back in the late '80s - early '90s as they didn't want to face relocating same should utility companies need access. Well as part of my preps to clear the way for my heirs to inherit the property, I've had a Transfer on Death Deed filed and made a move to relocate the fence to the property line as there is no longer any fears of utility company related issues.
My contractor stopped by as a courtesy informing them of the pending work so that they could secure their pets while the fence was being moved. One asshat boldly proclaimed that the strip of property from my fence to the property line was now his by adverse possession. I had to get my attorney to serve him noting that his use had been permissive and his claim notoriously false.
Never expected that shit from this bozo.

These are but two issues of late. I'm wondering if the world isn't getting loonier by the minute.

Had an EGD/colonoscopy six months ago. Despite preauthorization from my insurance company and assurance that it would be covered at 100% and my deductible wouldn't apply, I promptly received bills for physician, anesthesia, facility, and lab. These were forwarded to the insurance company who verified that they were covered at 100%. I made calls to each of the billers informing them of same, yet I continue to get bills for my deductible...which doesn't exist. I spent an hour on hold today before talking with someone at the facility who threatened to send my $5000 bill to collections. I tried to explain that she needed to send it back to the insurance company as the entire bill is covered at 100%...no deductible. She couldn't get it through her head and told me that unless I straightened it out with my insurance company (which I've already done) it was going to collections. Round and round we go, for six months now, with brain dead people who don't seem to know what 100% means.

Health care billing is a nightmare. I honestly don't know how elderly people with decreased faculties do it. I'd imagine that many of them are getting screwed out of money that they do not owe.

The neighbor is definitely an asshat.

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Viktor Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning, 1946.

I believe you work in healthcare. You need to step up your game. You are right it is a hassle. Just be happy you did not have a hospital stay seeing four or five docs and then aftercare. I have gotten very good at it. In fact I could open a business helping people with their medical claims.
You have to be very nice when you call and if you get an idiot call back later.

I've left clear instructions for my wife and children on how to access everything. Passwords, answers to typical security questions, etc. There's nothing secret or bad to be discovered, and it greatly simplifies their lives after I pass.

When my father passed in 2020 I was able to get into his laptop, and with the aid of his paper files able to identify accounts etc. But the GDF probate court in NYC is still sitting on things after over 3 years! Whatever value was in his estate is rapidly depleting for no reason other than willful dereliction of duty by the court.

I do know there are unanswered questions about a fraudulent withdrawal from his brokerage account shortly before his death as well as a possible earlier large scam/theft but because of the court not yet approving the executor we cannot get any information from Fidelity.

The legal system wrt probate is terrible.

Yes, my wife and I each have a password book in the safe. The good thing about Apple is they won't give it to ANYONE without a court order, not even law enforcement. If you remember the thread about a safe company and giving out the passcode a couple of months back-well, I'd rather have a password book in the safe.

First I want to say how sorry I am for your loss. I am curious as to the reasons you would need to access his computer and iCloud accounts?

All of that kind of info is in my password manager. I just provide the PWs for my iPhone, MacBook, and PW manager.

The PW manager is on both my iPhone and MacBook, so if they can get into either one all is well.
