Restaurant “health and wellness” charges
Man I hate this; i’d rather you raise your prices than to tell me on your receipt that you were expecting me to help compensate your employees for their salary and their healthcare.

Sadly, it’s such a trend in the Minneapolis area that you can’t get away from it if you want to eat at a nice restaurant.

So if your waiter calls in sick the next day, do you get a 4% refund?

So they list a set of prices, but, everything actually costs 4% more than what it's listed as?

I might be inclined to ask my appropriate state agency about the legality of listing one price and charging another.

In the meantime: For adequate service I usually tip 15%. For exemplary service: 20%. During the Thanksgiving through New Year holiday period I add 5% to each of those.

In this case I'd take whatever tip I'd planned and deduct 4%.

I would deduct all of the tip.

Gonna get roasted but that is the first 4% of their tip. What a crock of shit. What exactly does it do if it isn't a tip? Living wages and options for benefits sounds like 4% that I am paying towards their salary. Fuck you.

If they are paying their employees a living wage, why should I tip?

A friend of my wife invited her to lunch at Founding Farmers in Montgomery County, MD last week. Here's what their e-mail reservation confirmation had in small print at the bottom of the message:

"Please note, we are currently charging a 5% restaurant recovery charge for pandemic-related losses & debts, supporting the health of our teams, and community."

Bullshit.

By my calculation, that is not 4 percent.

The sticky bun seems a tad pricey. A restaurant would only get to gouge me once with that charge.

My tip goes down by 4%. Paying heath & wellness is not my job, if they’re good, pay ‘em more.
Otherwise, adios amigo.

It’s Minneapolis. Trust me, the state is ALL in.

I have never seen a mandatory charge for employee health care or benefits. I have seen were the restaurant asks for a donation.
I would NEVER pay that or ever return to the restaurant.
I would absolutely tell the manager why I will never be back.
Just more crap that's getting driven up our asses!

I run a small business. I would never do that. It shows me the stupidity of the owner.

Receipt shows really poor math.
It should have read $53.50 as total. 4% added for health and wellness brings it to $55.64. Then they add tax on top of all that. They expect you to tip on top of additional charge and tip?

This is another reason why I just make all my food at home and skip restaurants. $55 will buy a lot more groceries than that restaurant bill. These people are insane with this shit.
