Didn't want to hijack the daylight saving(s) time thread....

A few weeks back, I asked Siri when DST started. SHe told me April 1. Well, last week at church, there was a video about the time change. Odd, I thought, but nothing like being prepared. Then this past week, I saw something on a news site about DST.

Google: "daylight saving time" - today.
Google: daylight saving time united states" - today.

Siri - "daylight saving time" - April 1.
Siri - "daylight saving time united states" - April 1.

Well, turns out I had my language set to "English (Australian), female". When I switched it back to "English (United States), Australian accent", Siri gave me the correct info. But still, NO EXCUSE for the query "daylight saving time United States".

Presumably, my phone would have changed based on time zone. But still.

Thus the metric system did not really catch on in the States, unless you count the increasing popularity of the nine-millimeter bullet.

Maybe she was just joking? Thus, the April 1 reference.

Well, there is that. Then apparently Google doesn't have a sense of humor.

Well, DST is pretty much a joke anyway, so...

As to Siri being stupid, she certainly seems to have a problem with a Scottish accent (NSFW):

I'm betting you didn't say 'daylight saving time United States." You simply asked when does daylight time start.

But I am perplexed like you that by selecting "English (Australian), female" that it made Siri think you were actually in Australia or want everything from an Australian perspective. I suppose you have to be careful what you asked for.

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." You can get a Hal 9000 version now. Of course it won't open the bay doors when you ask and it will probably kill most of your family.

Actually, I did. And it was transcribed onto the screen EXACTLY as I quoted above: daylight saving time united states".

I also tried "daylight savingS time united states" (plural). Just for grins. Same answer - April 1.

I believe that I have mentioned this before, but I still laugh every time I think of it.

I was showing my iPhone to a friend who uses a flip phone (he would probably use a rotary dial if it was available).

I said, "Siri -- <friend's_name> wants to get laid."

Siri responded with contact information for a handful of local escort services.

And that's why they got caught. They asked Siri!

I can't believe someone else has done that!!
We had some Aussie friends visit and I set the Siri voice to Sheila for fun. Liked it and left it that way. BTW now I can tell if I have Google or Apple maps on, Apple Maps is the Sheila... Big Grin
