What fun would that be? The other thread is the perfect arena for all .gifs. But, not everyone pays attention. Hell, people can't seem to keep it together in threads that are years long and hundreds of pages. It's a bit of a let down.

I swear, some people would do well to read the entire thread before replying. Instead, they act like seagulls. Swoop and poop, squawk and fly off with zero regard for what’s going on. They just had to check it out real quick, shit all over everything and leave. It’s the same shit every time.

It’s the same guy shitting up the meme thread every two months. Same thing there, doesn’t add anything but commentary. Engage your brain before posting.

It’s not just “a bit of” a letdown, it’s an extreme letdown because the potential for fun and enjoyment is pretty big, but a few numbskulls have to ruin it for everyone because they didn’t read the thread or the thread title and just had to jump in the double-Dutch with both feet and stand there grinning like they’ve accomplished something.

This may seem a bit heretical, I don't normally check out the meme thread, but......

Got home from work the last time the meme thread got shut down.....wife is pretty mad, says "Can you believe this crap?!?"

I'm wondering, what got the woman all mad?

Me: "Whats wrong babe?"

Wife: "Some idiot got the meme thread locked down again!!"

Big Grin Big Grin

A thread like either of the meme threads, or that .gif thread, should be like a zen garden. The rudimentary rules aren't there to be inconvenient, but so that order and pattern create something greater. When people simply ignore it, or deliberately do, it is demoralizing for me to have to try to get people to stick to the rules.

This ties into my thread about negative waves, people need to take into account the OP, but the whole body of a thread. You need to read the whole thing. These "drive by" posts are a symptom of what FB or sites like Twitter have wrought.

The meme threads, the little stuff, takes maintenance. It's unnoticed, until the thread gets locked and the fun is over.

You can indeed look through the threads and find repeat offenders, it is a few members who can't seem to help themselves, and apparently have short memories and/or attention spans. It's getting old though, keeping after it. After a fashion it becomes a microcosm of why we have laws in meatspace, because of the lowest common denominator and the cost of managing them.

I understand the lockdowns, but see it as punishing all for the actions of one or two.

I’d rather see the offender get put on a “time out”, have the post remain, and then the rest of us can heap righteous abuse upon the transgressors for the next two pages...

Then again, I’ve been accused a time or two of being an aggressive meanie pants so I could be wrong...

Sometimes, aggressive meanie pants people have good ideas. This is one of those times.

Note to Arc -- would you consider a seven day "time-out" or something similar, for the offenders, instead of locking the thread for everybody? And yes, I realize that I have been guilty in the past, and a time-out might have been justified.

If the offender does not come back and realize why the thread got locked, there has been no learning experience for him.

On the other hand, if the offender receives a time-out, this will probably get his attention.

.gif certainly doesn't imply motion. Some .gifs have motion, most don't. But the non-motion ones generally aren't labeled, they are just there.

For example, the little ditzels on web pages that track your every motion are .gifs, and they don't move. GIFs are great for color/images that aren't intended to be photo-quality, or to be scaled, because GIFs make for smaller file sizes than JPG/JPEGs. Their limitations make them really bad for some things, but better for others.

Bottom line: Motion is only one reason they differ from JPEGs.

Incorrect. GIF and JPEG are simply image formats. GIF in no way implies animation.

So, let's play "what if?"

The .gif thread was locked because somebody (somebodies?) posted .jpg images.

What if Arc relents, and unlocks the thread? Would a non-motion .gif be cause for locking it again? The problem that caused the thread lock is probably not the difference between a .gif and a .jpg it is likely the difference between a motion type image and a non-motion image.

Simple: Fix the thread title. If animated GIFs are what the author meant, then that’s what the author should have written.

My smilies are all GIFs. Most of my avatars are GIFs. Most of them are not animated. GIF: Graphic Interchange Format. Note the absence of anything implying motion or animation.

People are free to pollute the English language to their heart’s content, but I’m not going to let abuse of technical terms slide Smile

Gentlemen, I used the word "implies" for a reason. I'm fully aware that there are non-animated .gifs. The main reason the format continues to exist to this day is that they can be animated.

You’re still wrong.

Did you know you can animate PNGs? Does that make them GIFs? Why has GIF survived in the age of animated PNGs?

This is a gun forum, and we're talking about "common parlance" of the term "GIF." Most people see an animated pic on here and assume it is a .gif, and if not animated, it's not a .gif. Particularly in the context of the meme thread paradigm, people want to see short animations in a "gif thread."

Sometimes you can be technically correct, but at the cost of ignoring context. Context which is more important.

I'll use a turn of phrase our dearly departed friend Jim Allen used on me a time or two, and here and there: "That's a distinction without a difference."

Or, if you the prefer the low-brow version: "Whatever."

Arc and Para's posts in this thread get to the heart of the matter at hand.

Oh, my goodness, yes. Let's do point out that the teeny little emojis and teeny little avatars are mostly non-animated GIFs. And let's do forget that the subject of this thread is not teeny little emojis or teeny little avatars, but rather, image files of some larger size.

We can't have imprecise terms being used, because if we have such, then, well, we'll just have to tear up the railroad tracks of this thread and derail it with pedantry.
