Why do some members neglect to enter a “Location” value in their profile?

That field is optional, also for a reason. Some people prefer stealth mode for their internet appearances.
Per a previous comment, members are free to enter anything (or nothing) in that field; there is no authentication.

A dangerous angry person and a group of his sycophants were trolling a few forums (unrelated to guns or Sigforum) some years ago and correlating the information to identify the individuals. I was one of the people they doxed, and they got close enough to put me and my career in danger. Since then I've been careful to keep details sparse and to even misdirect at times.
That event was after an unpleasant email contact from fed.gov related to this date in history (shortly thereafter) which also threatened my career.
Anonymity is called for on the web.

Let's be honest here. If you want privacy and leave your location out, no big deal, afaic. If you want to be humorous and put in something funny, that's fine, too. But, if you deliberately put in say, TX, when you're really in some other state, then that's just dishonest, imo. There are folks who have moved but forgot to revise their location, but that's just honest overlook.
