Why do some members neglect to enter a “Location” value in their profile?

Pipe SmokerWhy do some members neglect to enter a “Location” value in their profile?
Para has made it so easy to do – a shame that some members don’t. This post by “rat2306” in the “How hot is it where you are?” thread is worthless without it.

OttoSigIn fairness, to answer the question, “how hot is it where you are?”, knowing the
location isn’t necessary to answer the question.

arfmelSome members, rightly or not, don’t care to advertise their location, obviously. Maybe they value their privacy or something like that.

ArtieSI have mine as "Central Florida" that's a pretty big area, and yet, is pretty universally understood to be somewhere between Canaveral, and Tampa.

That's me. I say "Chicago" even though I am much closer to the Wisconsin border (30 mins) than I am to downtown Chicago (90 mins (on a good day)).
I learned to keep a low information profile a few years ago after exchanging insults with some Antifa creeps on Twitter. I used the same user name on Twitter and had my specific town listed in my profile. A few weeks later, there were attempts to hack some of my financial accounts. Luckily, all my financial accounts have really strong passwords (20 digits) and I always use 2FA.
Even though they didn't get into any of my accounts, I scrubbed my online profiles to remove specific information like my town.

True. But lack of location info makes his post in “How hot is it where you are?” rather worthless. The “where you are” part is significant.

ridewvI agree. It's not like you show your address but at least the general area where you are would be helpful to know on many posts.

I don’t think anyone is likely to be knocking on my door because I disclosed my location as San Diego.

Likely not. They are probably still out looking for South Congress AZ.

I guess when I read the question, the person asking it is asking what kind of heat members are dealing with. If one wanted to know the forecast for an area they could easily find that on the plethora of national weather forecasts.

Even if I don't meticulously blur the serial number in every firearm photo I post?
I figured the combination of those two were a surefire way to prevent Them from showing up on my doorstep...

irreverentI don’t share my location as part of my profile, simply because I’m not interested in randomly providing that info to complete strangers browsing the internet. OTOH, if you’ve ever engaged in a thread conversing with me and locations became pertinent, I think you’d know where I live.
Yes, I’m about privacy, and I agree that the thread in question might be more about “condition” than “location”.. perhaps I misread, though.

I would only knock on your door if I needed some crackers.

nhracecraftThis is a pet peeve of mine. Often those with either no listed location, or something they thought was witty that means nothing to anyone will post...'around here blah, blah, blah' and without the context of an approximate location, they're contributing NOTHING relevant to the conversation! Further this can affect posts about anything; vehicle availability/pricing, home pricing/availability, insurance costs, the weather (obviously!), cable/internet providers, availability of certain foods, issues in the public schools, etc, but it's certainly not limited to those topics. I've even seen posts where members are posting about 2A issues, and they don't let on where they're located. It simply makes NO sense!
Seriously, even the tiny states of Rhode Island and Delaware have populations of more than ONE MILLION, so there's really NO chance of anyone being somehow compromised for at least listing the state where you live...C'mon man!

OKCGeneI'm just waiting for a new member to enter their location as "Toad Suck Arkansas".

PASigWhy does that bother you so much?
I could care less about seeing a location listed, if it's pertinent the poster will indicate where they are?

sigmonkeyI don't even know where I am, I just posted the state shown on my license plate...
