Vulgar Language...
While I am FAR from being a prude, I also feel that foul/vulgar language is not really necessary for most folks if they have a decent vocabulary!

Case in point: I've been going through the "Meme" thread on here and am a bit taken aback by the quantity of MF's and F-words posted. Seriously? I'm knocking on the door of 60 years old so you will not be able to use language that I've never heard before, but the AMOUNT of foul language is just a tiny bit disconcerting. Anyone with a reasonable vocabulary should be able to find alternatives!

Just my 2¢ worth... I really don't expect anyone to agree with it.

Cheers!

Eh, doesn't bother me one bit. And, Para has addressed this many times before. He'll decide when and where to step in. Just let him do his job.

We are rowing the same boat and I am a couple decades behind you. We are seeing it more and more in shows now since so many are made for the streaming platforms and they aren’t restricted.
Especially shows kind of geared at High School kids or even younger. Yeah, sure we cursed some but not like what are in these shows.
Gets a bit frustrating as there is a time and place but a lot of it serves zero purpose.

But culture is adding to it. So many politicians are cursing in their speeches and comments etc. It is becoming more and more common for place unfortunately.

What gets me is random cursing with no style. Like in the post above with Samuel Jackson, and Ian McShane on Deadwood, some people can use foul language as an art form.

I did not get the impression that Bill felt the need for the SigForum mods to start censoring , left and right, at all.

Generally I also agree with the OP. The gratuitous or casual use of foul language is inappropriate. I remember taking my kids when they were young to a Miami/Buffalo football game and saw some slob walking around with a T shirt that said "Fuck Buffalo." I don't have the words to describe how wrong that was.

On the other hand, sometimes the use of foul language can add effect, especially with regards to humor, which may explain why you see a greater concentration of its use in the memes thread.

I look at SigForum like a trip to the salad bar, I wouldn't think of eating half of the stuff that they put out, but I keep going back because of the stuff that I really like. And as long as no one starts crapping on my tray, life is pretty darn good. And ! It's just as important not to fowl other people s tray as well.

Kid I had working for me in the jail was fresh out of the army. Every sentence he spoke had 2-3 F bombs. Occasionally, he would say something without any foul language, stop, and correct himself by repeating it with several F bombs inserted.

His mother was the principal of the elementary school about a block away. He didn't speak like that in front of her, at least.

Mister Falcon!

There's a place for expletives, but they lose their impact if they're thrown around constantly - and I think they're overdone in the current vernacular.

But this is not Romper Room, and this is not the '60s.

And I'm no prude.

I told my wife right before I got up on a rickety ladder to clean the glass and replace a bulb on an inconveniently-awkward light fixture, that if she heard a loud thump followed by a vocabulary lesson, to come help me up. Wink

Fuckin' A! Well said! hahahahahahahahahahahaa

All kidding aside it has become far too commonplace. It was one thing to experience / use "colorful" language in the service as an Army Drill Sergeant and later as a Naval Officer, but is quite another in environments these days that years ago would have been verboten.

The problem with this approach is that now one is trying to not offend another person, making concessions, being politically correct. I occasionally use profanity in life, sometimes in this forum. I like to think that I choose to use a profane word because it is the most appropriate one at the moment.

I think my philosophy on profanity is the same as Frank Zappa:

“There is no such thing as a dirty word. Nor is there a word so powerful, that it's going to send the listener to the lake of fire upon hearing it.”
