parabellumIt's two-factor authentication. It helps keep your account secure. It also helps Gunbroker, as well as members of Gunbroker, since this system makes theft much less likely.
If you have an account, they already have your phone number. They're just asking you to enter it so they can send you a code. It takes less than a minute and it makes it highly unlikely that anyone could hack your account, or that they would even try.

old rugged crossThanks, I do not go there that often and had not seen that. Must be fairly new. Thanks for the explanation.

Black92LXThese texts verifications are beyond frustrating.
I don’t give any businesses my cellphone number strictly the house phone which does not get texts.

chongosuerteI got a new phone last week. Been having to log back into apps that my phone had not logged fully out of or was recognized as authorized.
I’ve had a hell of a time. Evidently some of them are THREE factor authentications. With my ex wife being one of the numbers that I have to get a code from, in addition to mine. Vexing. Took me hours to get back into my Microsoft account.
I’d like to take the hackers and smash their balls with a meat hammer for creating this environment.
Knowing what one is talking about is widely admired but not strictly required here.
Although sometimes distracting, there is often a certain entertainment value to this easy standard.

.38supersigI'm in luck.
I had my account suspended because after 12 years, they weren't sure it was me.
Now I get to buy all of my neat stuff from somebody else.

Expert308I've seen a definite uptick lately in vendors going to 2FA and insisting on texting codes to me. I get the reason why they do it, but yeah it is kind of aggravating.
July 11, 2026, 01:02 PM
parabellumWhat would be more aggravating would be to have your account hacked, or to get ripped off by someone who hacked an account.
Does locking your doors aggravate you guys?

They could just as easily send the confirmation code to an email address.
SPAM calls and texts on my cellphone all the time would be more frustrating than a hacked account.

GraniteguyI'll take the 2-factor text verifications all day long vs. the aggravation and having one of my accounts hacked. (which often leads to several accounts getting hacked)

SMS is more secure than e-mail.
From November to February I fought a hacker trying to get into my accounts from e-mail.
They had everything BUT my cell phone hacked.
They ONLY got into my primary mail account and not my account I use for financial stuff.
But they tried everything to get the passwords changed. What stopped them?
The SMS codes. I locked down everything. My trust find is now locked and no longer accessable online.
The ONE account they did successfully hack was my PayCor account for my direct deposit.
All thye needed was my SSN. It's now locked.
Only our HR can open it.

Yes, because you log in to Gubroker "all the time", right? Come on.
And even if you include all other possible sites you visit, few of them use 2FA. The sites that use enhanced security are things like financial institutions, healthcare portals and the like. It's preposterous for you to say that you would be inundated by "spam" all the time.
It would be great if we didn't need locks, or the police, wouldn't it?

sigmonkeyOne is more likely to have their phone number obtained by Spammers by using their phone to call business and other entities, by automated systems and call logging, caller ID. (than 2FA text request)
Some companies will even tell you they sell your phone number, name and address and such to marketing firms, in "privacy policies".

FredwardSome two factor is via email. Some offer you both choices. Some offer multiple choices, such as email and two options for phone verification. I have a site that has my wife's number as well, so if I am incapacitated, she can access my money.

I have no qualms with 2FA. It’s with giving my cellphone number.
None of these institutions you mention have my cellphone either. They use FaceID, home phone, or email. There are numerous ways to get 2FA without my cellphone number.

parabellumThat's fine, Black. Forget that your cellphone is about as secure as it gets these days, and forget that your cellphone has a way to filter and even suppress phone calls. Just forget all that. You're sure showin' em.

What if it were your bank account that was hacked?
People are clearly different, when it comes to what ticks them off. I get spam calls and texts numerous times a day. Doesn’t bother me one bit. Totally ignore and immediately trash them. But, getting stuck in traffic is something that will drive me bonkers. Lol.

pace40In 2026, your cell phone is you. Never more apparent than when I had to take a picture of my DL and my face, and scan the DL barcode, to be able to log into .gov websites. No smartphone? Then drive 40 minutes to the closest "participating post office" to verify your identity. Just the way it is.
