One of the reasons I'm usually ok being a generation or two behind. Don't always need the new hotness, nor the buying frenzy that accompanies.

Clickbait is exhausting and offputting. Frankly, I don't know anybody that's the target demographic for it, and it turns people off rather than what I assume was the originator's intention. Perhaps they're targeting window lickers with the memory of a goldfish, and I just don't associate with anyone like that.

More often than not, it's also accompanied by logistics/manufacturing issue and the item being in physical or digital stores is many months different than the countdown timer.

A few non-vendor examples:
  • I used to really like Col. Allen West and followed him on FB. Apparently, he hired a social media manager and that person was a chronic clickbaiter. Huge announcements, Col West eviscerates so and so, etc. but when you click it was either a mundane announcement or Col West politely disagreeing somebody (my vision of eviscerates is the drill instructor in Full Metal Jacket), etc. I fixed it by unfollowing Col West even though he was running for Gov of Texas at the time. I'm the target demographic for their campaign but their endless clickbait caused me to tune them out.
  • Sometime in 2023, YouTube implemented the "premier" feature letting people post their videos at a certain time on a certain date (e.g. 7 AM Saturday morning) with a thumbnail "premier" placard until then. I'm 95% sure that the only new feature was the thumbnail premier placard (i.e. they could already schedule when a video would post). Thing is it was their normal 7 AM Saturday morning video that I had been viewing for a couple years and it was rarely ever even out of the ordinary.

I'm sure there has been a study that indicates the "announcement for an announcement" induces some sort anxiety to drive a specific type of consumer to continuous search for what the announcement might be. Thus generating hype for the unknown product and more eyes to the manufacturer. I find this scummy as it preys on the neurotic.

Reminds me of the ‘coming soon’ trend I see real estate agents use now. “Gotta have build up and suspense!”

On a recent open house he wanted us to have family and friends park their cars outside the house to give the perception of ‘must have’.
