I am so pissed off that this is coming from our municipal officials. WTF is going on in their brains? This doesn't reduce my taxes, it just readjusts where my rewards go. This came today via email. Dear Lacey Township Resident, As the Mayor of Lacey Township, I'm pleased to share with you a new program that will help you reduce your property tax bill each year. I know that for many, property tax represents the largest bill of the year. For many, a way to reduce this bill is important. That is why I am happy to introduce to you our new Lacey Estate Card. The Lacey Estate Card is a debit card that earns you a reward on every transaction you make in the form of a credit that is applied directly towards your property tax. Additionally, local and online spending at participating merchants earn an even greater amount of reward. The Lacey Estate Card is a great program to help you reduce your tax bill through your everyday spending. The program is designed to not only help you personally, but to also help support and grow local businesses. Additionally, it aims to generate new revenue for the Township which will be applied towards the general tax base, ultimately helping every property owner. I am very excited about this new program and hope you will be too. You can learn more about the program and sign up for it at LaceyEstateCard.com. Lacey Township is blessed with a dedicated and responsive Committee, and I am honored and thankful to serve as your Mayor. We want to ensure that Lacey Township continues to be a great place to live, work, raise a family and grow a business. We hope that this program is utilized by all to help you, our local businesses and Township! Living the Dream

It's actually designed to let the local businesses pay your property taxes. How socialist of them. Who do they think pays these "rewards"? That's part of the fees paid by merchants every time you use your card.

As a debit card, you'll also have to have funds on deposit. Wonder if you'd get a better benefit by using a cash back credit card. Speak softly and carry a

I use my Costco Visa card for rewards. In a week or so when my new statement arrives my cash back will be over $700. Doing what my township asks does not lower my taxes, it just gives them my cash back without having the choice of what I want to do with the money. Some people take that money and shop at Costco only to give them it back in cash. I always take the cash and put it right in the bank. I will use the Costco card in the store even with their cash in my pocket. Charging it and paying the CC in full gets me money back, using cash at Costco does nothing for me. Living the Dream

Our township has a council with the normal officers (President, VP, etc); everything must be voted on. Which brings me to my question; was this plan proposed to the township residents so they could voice their opinion or was it more of a "surprise, this is what we're doing"?

We do that around here for the Parochial school my grandkids are just starting to go to. How bout just reducing taxes?? Or just leave them the same for two or three years in a row? mine go up yearly thanks to our local school district that spends spends spends and forgets to teach or discipline. We have townships here in Illinois too. They are a layer of government between the County and local municipalities. As far as I can tell, the only thing they do is roads (snow plowing, trimming overhanging branches, etc.). But we have Township commissioners, officers, and employees. Want to reduce taxes? Here’s a thought, roll Township services into the County and eliminate the Township altogether. _____________________________________________________________________ “One of the common failings among honorable people is a failure to appreciate how thoroughly dishonorable some other people can be, and how dangerous it is to trust them.” – Thomas Sowell

Read comments on the articles elsewhere concerning Amazon not opening in NYC. Many think NYC actually saves 3 billion from this. I'm sure many in your area thinks this tax format is a great idea. Financial illiteracy is rampant.

I'm missing what you are pissed about? If I read it correctly they are offering a rebate credit card. Instead of getting airline miles, hotel stays, or cash back you get your reward in the form of tax credits. What is to be angry about? IF the cashback from Lacy is good use it, if Costco, Discover, or Delta beats it use their reward cards. Jesse Sic Semper Tyrannis

Regardless of if you have their credit card or not, my taxes are Still $7,800 a year. My Costco card gives me different rates depending on where I buy my gas, food, eat out etc... The township card will get a flat percentage for every purchase. Let me decide how I will disperse the money earned from my credit cards. I didn't see this plan in the township meeting minutes, only in the email they sent. Living the Dream

Does this reduce your taxes? No.. but if my Visa card I use now gives me 1 or 2% cash back and theirs gives me more then I still think it’s nice to have that option.. Even if it gives me the exact same $ amount at least it’s going towards something I’m going to HAVE to pay vs something I may want. Yes I understand it’s just moving money from one place to another and if you’re disciplined if they give you the same % it really not doing you any favors

I also grew up in New Jersey (Monmouth County) and I remember something like this being done back in the 90s. Back then my wife and I used our American Express cared all the time because it gave us reward points we could use to trade for merchandise. When I saw this back then I said why would I want to give up the points so the town could benefit and not us.This message has been edited. I can't see this working for very long. My sister and her husband live in North Jersey and are looking for a house but are getting discouraged seeing ones they like and can normally afford but with $20,000 a year property tax bills! WTF!

This is why he is pissed. “...new program that will help you reduce your property tax bill each year.” It’s not reducing anything, but will make people think their taxes are lower than they really are. Then the govt can creep them up even more, because the taxpayers won’t be directly feeling the impact. Demand not that events should happen as you wish; but wish them to happen as they do happen, and you will go on well. -Epictetus

Maybe I'm not understanding correctly, as read it, it is just an alternate cash back CC where your rewards are going to taxes instead of cash back, airline miles, or Costco gift certificate. I got married this year and put the whole thing on my Costco card, then paid it off the following month. I will be getting a very nice Costco voucher this year for doing that. If I had available one of those county cards and the rebate was equal to or competitive with Costco CC I would have used the county one and received a nice sized check from my mortgage company for the overpayment of escrow. To me cash > voucher or miles. I could then take that check and buy anything I want instead of having to use it for stuff from Costco or flights with Delta, namely my kitchen remodel. It appears to just be an added option in your arsenal of rebate CCs. I like options, especially ones that lead to cash instead of miles. Jesse Sic Semper Tyrannis

The email from the Township doesn't once mention anything about rates or the % you will receive compared to the Credit Cards I currently have. Every month I pay my CC cards that I use in full, have not payed interest in the last 25 years. Before we received our Costco Credit card, we used Amex as much as we could for over 15 years without cashing in. That allowed a family of 5 to fly to Disney, Stay there for 7 nights and park hopper tickets for 6 days. Food, I payed for. After Amex started offering less, we decided the Costco card was better for us. Living the Dream
