I keep running into idiotic AI videos, of quite good quality, of guns that simply do not exist and, to my knowledge, never have. I encounter two recently-a Thompson/Center three shot break open revolver, and a Heritage Arms lever action mini-revolver. I'm pretty sure these items (and a bunch more I just skipped past) are pure fiction. What is the purpose of these posts?

To make us look.

Unfortunately that sort of thing is only going to become more and more prevalent.

A few weeks ago I ran across a video claiming that the Supreme Court had made a ruling that would have overturned many of the state and local laws infringing on our gun possession rights. I was immediately skeptical because I haven’t seen anything about such a ruling elsewhere. But it would have been such good news if true that I couldn’t resist watching the video. It was, as I expected, completely bogus, but it accomplished the goal of getting me to click on it.

To monetize their quick and easy to make videos.

Due to the videos metadata, YouTube matches ads to a video based on viewer demographics, user interests, and the video's niche topic.

Once they get a 1000 subscribers they achieve ad monetization as long as they have consistent public content published and get watch hours. If they can keep an audience watching longer than 8 minutes they can show you more ads.

Let's circle back to the quick and easy to make videos. They have AI generate a script on a topic and are concerned about length of video (i.e. ad revenue) not accuracy. Then AI samples videos from other YouTube channels calling it fair use which is why you'll see so many clips stitched together only marginally related to the what the author is saying (e.g watching a video supposedly about a 1960s Farmall tractor, the words talk about Farmall, but the video may be showing a John Deere). They can churn out several dozen videos in a month, but somebody actually filming content is burning the midnight oil to post 8 videos a month.

If you circle back to YouTube monetization, they're ticking all of the boxes to monetize their videos and AI is doing most of the work.
