If the filling is shallow enough I don't get numbed. I take gas, just in case, but pass on the numbing.

Tends to freak the dental assistants out a bit, in particular

Hopefully it at least works well enough to get through the procedure. They usually have trouble getting me numb enough, and then when they do finally get me numb it tends to not last long enough.

I'll take the droopy weird face over numb-to-touch but numb-to-pain.

My MO…

Not numb enough…more Novocain…

Not numb enough…a bit more…

…and, a bit more.

Can’t feel entire face until next day.

My periodontist actually did a really good job of numbing me up for extensive procedures, recently. (Full root scaling and planing, plus an extraction.) Didn't feel a thing. Even the numbing shots weren't bad. And it all wore off w/in about two hours of the finish.

Oral surgeons and Periodontists tend to be better at these things. Endodontists are right up there as well.

I used to go to the dental school at UCSF to get work done. One time, it was the head of the department doing a filling for me. He had a very interesting technique that completely changed my way of thinking about dental procedures.

He grabbed the side of my jaw, with his thumb inside my mouth, and shook my jaw as he inserted the needle. I didn't even feel it.

My dentist does that. It's true: you don't feel the needle injection. Cool

My dentist gives me just enough to be off the numbness about 1/2 hour after I leave his office.

My old dentist did that too.

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Find a dentist in your area with the Solea dental laser — it’s a game changer. No numbing at all and makes quick work of a filling.

“Your gonna feel a little pinch”

Bullshit. I know what a needle feels like. I see the needle in your hand. It’s gonna feel like a frickin needle.

My dentist has been saying that for literally 50 years!!!! Right after he shakes my cheek!!! I think the shaking is a distraction. Now before he goes into his speel, I just say it for him, we then both laugh!!!

I think the shaking has to do with spreading out he novocaine and getting it to work. Time is money you know.

I go the "no novocaine" route.

I am trying to transcend dental medication.

My dentist is a wizard with a needle. No pre-numbing swab, just grab your cheek, pinch it and slip the needle in. I feel his grip on my cheek more than the needle.

I asked him about it once, he said the "grab and pinch" is as much about distraction as it is access, plus needles are MUCH finer than they were 20 years ago.

Also, I forget what he said they use now, but they haven't used "novocaine" in years. Now it's sorta like "Kleenex"...what you're using ain't Kleenex, but everybody knows what you mean when you use that term.

Be careful when following the masses. Sometimes the M is silent.
