prairiefireCorporate sponsorship
The more I think about it, the more I am peeved about the whole idea of "corporate sponsorship". Basically, some company with whom I do business (my cable provider, Coca Cola, McDonalds and on and on) feel like they have so much of my (our) money that they can give oodles of it away sponsoring all types of enterprises. Why not return that money to me in the form of lower bills. I get no say in what they sponsor - and they get the credit for their "good deeds". It irritates me!

ZSMICHAELThey do not care about the event. It is merely another form of advertising.

Rey HRHThink of it this way: they're not taking the sponsorship costs out of their profits, they're taking the sponsorship costs out of their expense budget baked into their costs under marketing/promotions.

This.
They are investing money hoping for a return. The theory is they'll get additional business somehow (new customers, expanded purchase from existing customers).
It is trying to add value. If people want a product more, for whatever reason, they will feel they have received more value when they get it.
Now, not all sponsorships deliver. And some may tick group A off more than they entice group B.
But there is decent theory behind it. It's just another item in the marketing mix.
