Slow (really slow) drivers.

FrankMosesSlow (really slow) drivers.
In a nutshell, do you think they’re just incompetent, elderly, or, what? I’ve been thinking lately that they’re trying to get a good “Eco score” from their car. I got a RAV4 hybrid earlier in the year, and I’m very happy with it for all kinds of reasons, but I get annoyed when I turn off the engine and get a numerical “grade” and hints on how to improve it. Sorry, if I want to tear ass around somebody, I’m gonna do it. I don’t give a rats ass about some score. I know I’m going to get good mileage. I don’t need the best on the planet.
But I think other people, assuming other cars give this kind of score, are slaves to it to the point of only half a dozen people getting through a 30 second red light. Or are they just incompetent?
And one doesn’t exclude the other.

GustoferSome elderly, some who don't know how to look in a rearview mirror to realize that there's seven cars stacked up behind them, some too busy scrolling on their phone, and some are just assholes.
It never ceases to boggle my mind why it is so hard to just pull off and let people by. Everyone gets to their destination happy with no road rage.

12131It used to be the elderly, but my estimation is that the texting-while-driving crowd has overtaken them. The elderly I can understand, but the texting crowd is fucking inexcusable. In general, the elderly are slow because they’re, of course, old. But their eyes are glued to the road ahead. But the texting assholes are the ones that will cause accidents and hurt/kill others.

Z06^^Agree. My guess: 20% elderly - 80% texting assholes.

P250UA5And, when you get a chance to pass them, they speed up to the speed limit, or even over it.

oddballFor those driving below the speed limit in my world, especially on freeways and highways, they seem to be split into two groups- Karen looking women, alone, or hispanic drivers who I assume to be illegals.
The texting drivers I see are usually those who remain stopped 5 seconds after the light turns green. Almost 100% of them, they are looking down at their smartphones.

92fstechMe yesterday on the bike when I went out of my way to take one of the few fun curvy roads in our county home, and some middle-aged woman in a CRV with handicapped plates turned onto it in front of me right as I got there. And yes, she did 15-20 under the whole way.

Benefit of a bike, much better passing power [when safe to do so]

Problem being, it's a curvy road, and a no passing zone for the full length of it. And I don't ride stupid, or illegal. So I followed grandma at 35mph in a 55 zone (and also stopped behind her when she braked for no reason in the middle of the road because she didn't know what to do about the mailman who was going the other way on the other side of the road

), all the while lamenting her existence.

You're a better man than I am and that's all I have to say about that.

Over the last few years I've become convinced CRV drivers are the worst on the road. Somehow oblivious to the world around them while still making sure they are perfectly 5 under in a 25, 10 under in a 35 or 45, and 15 under anything higher. Just barely functional retards.

It's not just the CRV...it's that whole genre of mini SUV. My 70+ y/o parents have not one but two Chevy Equinoxes. My MIL has a CRV. They love them, but driving to them is just a chore, none of them can see, and they go everywhere under the speed limit.
I absolutely hate those vehicles. They lack any semblance of handling or performance, or the utility of a real full-size body-on-frame SUV. Fuel economy isn't even that great...better than my Suburban, but nowhere near what I get in our stick-shift Mazda 3 that even with an anemic little 2.0L inline 4 is more fun to drive. Heck, even my work Tahoe that's basically an ocean liner makes enough power to be fun on the EVO course, it's RWD so I can drift it (when I can get the stupid traction control to actually turn off), and I've held my own in several pursuits with it...not gonna do any of that with a 4-cylinder FWD or AWD micro-SUV.
There's not even any attempt at visual styling...all small SUVs look basically the same across brands. I've done my share of trying to identify suspect vehicles from grainy security camera footage, and those things suck because it's incredibly hard to find any differentiating visual elements between makes and models. They're all pretty much the same boring blob on four wheels.
The only thing they really have going for them is that they're easy to get in and out of and allow short people to sit a little higher so they can see better. Basically, they are road legal mobility scooters for people who have completely given up on getting any enjoyment out of driving and are just looking for an appliance to get them around until they die. It's the automotive equivalent of a nursing home.

So he passes the woman, pulls himself over, and the first thing he asks himself is “Do you know who I am?”

jed7s9bYou guys are far too nice. I think most of it is powerless Aholes out basking in the feeling of dominance over the line of cars behind them.
Same goes for the people stopping on a green light to wave out others waiting at a red light on a side road. Their feeling of “being kind” is nothing more than knowing they are screwing over the long line cars behind them waiting to use the green light.

I sold an ATV to a LEO. His street clothed fellow LEO buddy stopped in as the deal was done and asked to test drive it also. First thing he does is do wheelies on the highway in light traffic, with the uniformed LEO and patrol car right there.

I've never hesitated to pass a slow vehicle over a solid line when it's safe to do so, especially on a motorcycle that's smaller and has excellent acceleration. In most states you're legally permitted to pass stopped or slow moving vehicles across double yellow lines (other than a school buss with flashing red lights).
One reason is that safe, broken-line, passing lanes seem to be disappearing, as they re-pave highways many straight stretches that were dotted are re-lined double yellow. Neighboring Pennsylvania is particularly bad at this you might be on a road with 3/4 mile straightaways, woods on both sides, that used to be passing zones is now double yellow the whole way. If it's marked 55 and I'm following someone going 50-60 I might not pass but if they're only going 35-45 I'm squirting around at the first safe opportunity. Passing on curves is no problem as long as you can see all the way around them. Unfortunately there aren't many around here where you can.
Most annoying are vehicles that go painfully slow around curves only to speed up at passing straights making it more difficult to pass. Hint if you're driving along and a vehicle comes up behind you they have been going faster than you, slow down (making it safer to pass) and wave them around at the first passing opportunity. I appreciate when people do this for me and I certainly do it myself.
No car is as much fun to drive, as any motorcycle is to ride.
October 24, 2026, 09:11 AM
GustoferAnd then there's the sonsabitches who'll do 140MPH in a passing zone (two laner) just to keep you from getting around them, only to slow down to 50MPH when it merges back to one lane.
