Shingles Shot: Holy Sore Arm, Batman
Was at the doc on Friday and he suggested getting the shingles vaccine shot as I'm over 50 now and I've had coworkers and family get hit with it and it's brutal.

So they warned me I'd have a sore arm and I'm thinking like flu shot sore arm but holy crap this was like Mike-Tyson-punching-you-in-the-arm-hard sore. I'm still sore and hurting 3 days later. At least I know what to expect now in 3 months for the second shot!

Did anyone else get this and experience this? Still worth it though.

No. But it beats the shingles. I have had two sets of the shots and no problems. BTW you can still get Shingles, but it seems to lower the chances.

I did fine on the first shot, but that second one,
wowza. I was sore for days and got a little sick after it.

Is that all?

It gave me permanent shingles.

No shingles shot, pneumonia shot, flu shot, Covid shot or whatever shot “they” recommend for us old folks.

Are you serious? With the Shingrex? I'm 65, I've been to Wallgreens about three times to get a prescription and asked for Shingrex.
We are out. Next time sit and wait for an hour because we are busy. Asked my PCP said go to walgreens, LOL. I give up.
I've heard nightmares about Shingles. You said permanent, I thought it went away after a painful while. I'm so sorry for you.

The first shot was no problem. The second shot hurt for 3 or 4 days. Not quite like I squared up with Tyson, but if you were awake, you felt it. To me it was the same kind of pain that you can get from a cortisone shot; Sometimes it doesn’t hurt at all, sometimes you’re stiff as hell. But after hearing horror stories of adults getting shingles, I’d much rather deal with a stiff arm.

Marzy ain't kidding.

Neuropathy and all the ugly it can bring.

Shingles almost killed me in 2005. Ten days in ICY, 3 months in a private room after, and a year to recover to as good as it gets.

(issues with my left eye, some dain bramage, and still low platelets)

But, fuck death, I got shit to do.

And I am not getting the vaccine, if shingles ever catches me again and kills me, I won't care cuz I'll probably be dead.

But I am not playing Russki PokeMe Roulette...

I think it just varies a lot from person to person. I had both shots about 10 years ago. The first one gave me a moderately sore arm that took about 3 days to fade away, and made me very sleepy that first afternoon. The 2nd shot left just a mildly sore arm for one day.

Been there, done that. I should have had a clue when I was asked if I was right or left handed. Still better that than shingles. Sorry for those that had bad effects from the shot.

Had shingles 10 years ago. Not a fan. Got shot #1 this Jan., mild soreness next day. Got shot #2 in May, no soreness.

First Shingrix shot kick my ass, but the second shot was an order of magnitude milder.

I was originally scheduled to do the first shot on my 50th birthday and I'm glad that I postponed it until after my out-of-state company left. I would not have been a good host.

Ten years ago Shingrix didn’t exist, so you must have had the Zostavax version. Same here, but now the docs are pushing the new version even if you’ve had the previous one as it supposedly maintains better protection over time. Decisions, decisions.

During the covid pandemic came down with shingles prior to radiation therapy for prostate cancer. The shingles developed into postherpetic neuralgia. Not fun. Had to postpone the radiation therapy. After a few months the docs finally allowed me to get the shingle shots. Yes, I had a sore arm but if it prevents the shingles from coming back, I’ll deal with it.

Yes, Shingrix. There's even a note in my medical file that I am extremely allergic to the vaccine. Too late now.

Since 2020, I get them all along my scalp line and now for the past four months, I have extremely painful burning across two nerves on my back with a single shingle on either end.

I've lived with this misery for years now and everything they give me doesn't work.

Fortunately neither shot bothered me too much.

Now my spouse was a different matter.

She had had shingles in the past and wanted to get the shots. But was worried due to the stories about how much they hurt.

The first one was so bad she almost didn't go back to get the second. I had to remind her how bad shingles hurt and the shot would be just a temporary thing. Thankfully the second one wasn't too bad.

That is utterly horrible. I hope they can come up with something to ease your pain.

"10 years" was a guesstimate, I don't recall the exact date. Sometimes I don't remember what I had for dinner last night. But I do remember the doctor calling it Shingrix.

My wife had an experience similar to yours. I got the same shot, same day, and had almost no reaction, much like the typical flu shot.
