A Grateful American |
Dr. Cameron: "Idiopathic T-cell deficiency?" Dr. House: "Idiopathic, from the Latin meaning we're idiots 'cause we can't figure out what's causing it. Give him a whole body scan." Dr. Cameron: "You hate whole body scans." Dr. House: "'Cause they're useless. Could probably scan every one of us and find five different doodads that look like cancer. But, when you're fourth down, 100 to go, in the snow, you don't call a running play up the middle. Unless you're the Jets." Dr. Cameron: "I hate sports metaphors." Yes you should. Are you active duty or have access to Tricare? No differential diagnosis on discharge form ie, rule out seizure disorder, etc. ?

You should request a cardiology consultation for "near-syncope" (coming close to passing out). In my long experience, these are often heart rhythm issues, sometimes requiring a pacemaker, but at least it requires further evaluation. _________________________ “Remember, remember the fifth of November!"

Eye on the Silver Lining |
Just a thought-does this happen any particular time of day? I used to struggle with something that sounds similar, and it happened in the morning. In my case, the doc at the facility I worked at recommended I drink oj right away in the a.m. and not smoke for a bit. Perhaps it was just low blood sugar, whatever it was, though, this worked for me. I like the cardio workup idea, though, and the neuro. It's scary when you don't understand why your body is failing you like that. Best of luck. __________________________ "Trust, but verify."

It's time to drop anchor on it and make them figure it out. Bring it up your chain for resolution - I dealt with my fair share of issues in the Navy but as some point you have to say "listen, I'm having an issues and you aren't fixing it". I think Navy medicine is better than VA healthcare, but not by much.

You need to invest time talking to your PCM...if you get blown off, talk to a patient advocate. Definitely roll-in your leadership (up to and including the CO); there is an unresolved medical issue requiring attention and you're getting fast-food service medicine. Barring that, talk to a case manager (usually a civilian or a contractor)--they can look to see what specialists you need for referrals and can aid the doc in your care. I've been a CO and have had discussions with the docs/case managers to ensure my folks (or their families) were receiving the care they required.

I swear every time I have gone to the VA they read someone else's charts to me. "You have a spastic Colon" Me: I am here for my in grown toe. Then the guy leaves and comes back 45 minutes later. ___________________________________________________ But then of course I might be a 13 year old girl who reads alot of gun magazines, so feel free to disregard anything I post.

I agree. You need a definitive diagnosis. Well, at least they did not suggest mental health yet. Sometimes though that is a good option as those folks will get a complete history and listen to what you have to say rather than run a bunch of tests. Vertigo is treated and diagnosed by both neurologists and ENT docs. The above post is correct with the description of drive thru medicine. You deserve better. We all know the Admiral gets better care.

Too old to run, too mean to quit! |
I had somewhat the same kind of problems years ago. They dicked around for days while I was in the hospital. Did all the blood work, etc and they were helpless. Then a nutritionist came along, looked at my records and proceeded to tell me all about my lifestyle, habits, etc. Turns out I was hypoglycemic (opposite of diabetic) and was experiencing very low blood sugar. Push to get a glucose tolerance test!!! Elk There has never been an occasion where a people gave up their weapons in the interest of peace that didn't end in their massacre. Oh stewardess, I speak jive. |
VA hospitals are the saddest places I think I've ever been. Crippled kids I've seen begging for food at an intersection in the Dominican Republic may have been more hopeful.

Staring back from the abyss |
Last night I was reviewing a chart for an upcoming elective surgery. Reading through the guy's history and physical from the VA I come across his assessment: Laryngeal cancer. Plan? Not to hijack the thread, but do medically retired vets have Tricare?
