patwSmall rant about Entenmanns crumb cake
The one small item I really miss is the way Entenmanns used to make their crumb cake. Now they just put crumbs and powder on their flat version of their pound cake. It tastes nothing like their original version I remember. I bought a Publix crumb cake, (local grocer), but last one we tried tasted bitter like they forgot how to make it and decided to try something different with their recipe. It's a shame more places are quitting quality to increase their profits with subpar attempts of their prior product.
I know it's minor but I don't usually eat many sweets other than a few things and this was one of them.

sigmonkeyEntenmann's closed the Bayshore plant in Long Island in 2014, so the products are baked elsewhere and have not been the same since.
I stopped buying their products a few years after.

PASigNone of this store bought stuff is any good anymore between shrinkflation and gov mandated trans fat crap. And the prices are eye-watering now.
May as well just make it yourself these days, that is a very easy cake to throw together

PatriotI still treat myself to the crumb topped donuts if they are bogo.
Three of them and a strong cup of coffee…NOM NOM NOM.

NontypicalNot only do I miss the round French crumb cake, but also driving past the plant on 5th Ave when I was working in the area. You could smell that place from a mile away. Even if I had just finished lunch, one whiff of it and I’d be getting a craving for any Entenmanns that I could find.

Kraft General Foods sold its bakery business to CPC International (later Bestfoods) in 1995.[9] Bestfoods was purchased by Unilever in 2000,[10] which sold its baking division to George Weston, a Canadian baked goods and supermarket business, the following year. Weston sold its US interests including Entenmann's, in 2008 to Mexican conglomerate Grupo Bimbo.
Other Bimbo Bakeries USA holdings include Thomas', Brownberry, Boboli, Arnold, Oroweat, Freihofer’s, and Stroehmann.[13]
They had a bakery in NJ. The normal routine for Sat. when I was a volunteer at the towns First Air Squad was their chocolate donuts. That was bake in the days when they still were a NY/NJ operation.

flesheatingvirusI've also posted that these aren't anywhere near as good as they used to be:
The texture is all wrong- waxy and boring. They also seem more desiccated and shrunken. My grandmother used to buy these when we were kids. I remember grabbing one with a glass of milk. I'd break one in half and let one half sink to the bottom of the glass to make a yummy sludge for the end. I know, it sounds gross, but it was amazing.

clipper1slight thread drift, but this conversation reminds me of the deep butter and crumb cakes from the German bakeries in St. Louis, Mo. I suppose they are non-existent by now, but gads they were goood.

Xtbone97xChocolate “like” coating…it’s some weird, engineered coating. You can hold one for 5 mins and it won’t melt on your fingers!!
Been sad days for snack cakes for a longtime.

casI miss being able to afford them. Good lord. Every time I pick one up in a store I laugh at the price and put it down. "Are you insane?"
Every now and then when I do have something from them, it's lacking.
I used to have a coworker who worked at Entenmmans, he haaaaated the family, any time the name came up he'd curse them. (of course he was a scheming, lazy, POS so that means little. lol)

This made me think of Hostess. They're now 1/2 the size they used to be and don't taste the same either. Sad.
(have an employee who delivered for them, he too curses, but for different reasons. I believe a pension he didn't get.)

If you're in the southeastern U.S., Publix frequently has BOGO on Entenmann's products.

Kind of like tropical chocolate?
None of these snack cakes are anywhere near the size, and taste the way they did, back in the '60s. Twinkies, cupcakes, Ho-Hos...you name it. They're all chemical shit now.

Entenmanns
Growing up on Long Island in the 1990's I watched them go downhill and fast. It was some of my first experiences of disappointment.
