I'm not a fan of tipping. It's a silly concept but I do it because our society encourages the practice. I even tip the idiots who are not performing well.

When I go to Subway, I only tip 50% of the minimum suggested because I did half the work of building the dang thing...

And then they stand there, hovering, staring at you, as you decide what you want (or not want) to tip.

A tip, by definition, is something on top of what is normal or average. Tip of a spear, for example. I feel no need to be guilted into paying someone extra, for a job that they are already being paid to do, when the service they provide doesn't warrant it. Put in a little above and beyond? I'll slip you a little extra for the effort.

I was worried this week might pass without witnessing someone so completely clueless that they make your head hurt. Apparently that concern was unfounded.

Hate the escalation/expansion of the practice all you like, but don't confuse your disdain with an actual change to the underlying comp structure in place for wait staff.

I am well aware of the "comp structure in place for wait staff", and I don't care. If it is such a big problem that they need to guilt people into giving them their participation trophy, they can do one of two things: Change said "comp structure" or get another job that pays better. It's simple really.

ETA: They could also try a third thing - earn it. Smile, make me laugh, be timely, keep my water topped off, etc.... There's a life lesson in there - if you want something extra you need to earn it. Simply being there and doing an average job ain't good enough...in life or as a waitress.

I tip and it's usually a little more than 20 percent for good service. I can only recall two times when I walked out of a restaurant without leaving a tip and that was because of the waitresses' attitude and crummy service. One was an Outback and the other was a locally owned breakfast/lunch place that has had several owners in the past two or three years.

I sometimes tip tradesmen who come to the house to service things-for example, I fired my A/C guy several years ago and hired another, and, this year, simply quit using them. I found another and engaged them to check my system and the tech they sent did a great job. He showed me some things that needed to be done so I brought him back yesterday. He worked most of the day in the hot attic in my garage and always had a smile and pleasant demeanor. On both occasions I gave him a tip when he was done. Plus, he was an aspiring gun guy, so it was a pleasure to talk Trap shooting with him, too.

The company he works for has great ratings (yeah, I know they can be phony) but I'll give them a chance to keep me as a customer.

I don't generally tip at takeout food places except at a Mom and Pop Cuban restaurant that we've patronized since they opened. We like them, like their food and service and most of all, their friendly attitude.

I guess I'm a little easy-if the server is nice, polite, friendly and takes good care with my order, he/she gets a tip.

And the listed percentage is figured on the after tax amount effectively upping the tip percentage

If I pay cash and give a fifty for a 32 dollar meal and your answer is " Do you want change". Your tip gets adjusted to 15 percent pre tax amount. Usually tip 20 percent of total because math is easier.
Kiosk at the table to order and pay equal no tip

Also, many servers have to split the tip with the kitchen, bar, and hostess. -Longhorn

I had decent service. Better than average.

Total bill was $9.45 before tip. I gave the waitress a $20 bill. She brought change -- a nickel, two quarters, and a ten dollar bill.

V-Tail that's the correct change in the fewest bills and is what I would have done. Unless you specifically asked "please bring a 5 and 4 ones". It annoys me using that example when I hand her a $20 while already having $1's in my wallet to use up for the tip only to end up with more ones.

We eat in a lot of smaller, family-owned restaurants, always tip 20%. We get local discounts a lot of the time and tip based on full price.

My barber is a lady that's been cutting my hair for 20 years. She moved from a salon to her home studio, I still tip 25%. My haircut takes 15-20 minutes and is $30.00 with the tip, every 2 1/2 months

A savvy waiter/waitress who works for tips brings the change as a a nickel, two quarters, and a five 1's, and one 5 so the customer has 1's to tip with. It used to be routine, but has become rarer and rarer.

Have you considered that they are doing the job of a waittress because they cannot afford one???

You tip based on the job, not WHO is doing the job. If they are doing the job of a waittress, than you tip because they are a waittress.

This has been standard operating procedure since the 70s.
If there hasn’t been *any* bar bill, the bartender is SOL.

The only ones left out are usually the busboys and the dishwashers.

$15? I wish. Mine charges $45 and I don't tip on top of that. She owns her own salon and is the only employee.

It's even worse than that in some cases. Some jobs tip out the bar, front of house, kitchen, etc. based on a percent of sales and take that from the waitstaff. Regardless of what actual tips are.

But screw them, right?

I LOVE the fine point put on "I'm not tipping on taxes" strategy. Oh, by all means be sure to math that out because that ~1.4% savings will almost certainly matter so much more to you than the folks having to wait tables for a living. Yep, on a $50 tab you saved $.70, but by golly you set your principles firmly and stuck to it!

I had the question about tipping a massage therapist who works out of their house. They charge the going rate as if you went to a massage spa but don't have the overhead involved.

I tip 20 percent plus two dollars. My mother was born in 1928 and was a rotten tipper. So, now I pay it forward. The extra 2 dollars is known as "my Mom's cut."
