I get 25 days of vacation a year. I have EARNED that time with dedication to my occupation.

I am a Director. I EARNED the title.

That comes with sacrifice. I wind up not using a majority of my vacation time. Since I am in leadership, I have the option of donating that time to a sick employee that has no time to take. That's a lot of money from me when other employees maybe an hour to the recipient. They covet their vacation jealously.

Well we have an employee with less than 3 years that came down with some sort of leukemia. He requires treatment that ate up all of his vacation with ease. He only had 2 days left and the first visits ate them immediately. I secretly had HR give him 96 hours to start and was to cover any losses up to all of mine if nobody else steps up as usual.

Fast forward to this past Friday. Moral is complete shit because of the covid and there has been no COL raises or Christmas bonuses, much less the Thanksgiving lunch we used to have.

We FINALLY have a Halloween cubicle decoration contest. I put a lot of effort into making my department the fucking neitherworld. My own assistant is too busy gambling on stocks on his phone to participate.

Heck I donated a PILE of my decorations so others could have SOMETHING up. I WANT people to compete. This is supposed to be fun.

THEN the shipping department learns there is a cash prize. He and the other Lets Go Brandon voters conspire to stuff the ballot fishbowl at the last minute after voting is done.

By some mysterious miracle HE wins the competition and all he has done is stuck some lables on shipping containers and stuck some of the roaches I got from the movie studio next door's prop department on them.

He is bragging about having to go "the political route" to win as he takes the cash prize.

Look, I know I'm a leader, but I'm not an executive. However I gave this fucker 96 goddammed hours of pay. You'd think he would have a conscience about doing shitty things as there were actually other people competing fair and square.

I can handle a fair fight and loss. Heck, one of my graphics girls would beat me either in costume or department decor. We would congratulate each other and laugh.

This cheating fuck just ruined it for EVERYONE. You think morale was shit before this. There is nothing I can do now.

Effective Monday, all of my vacation is to be withdrawn and anything he hasn't used from my rollover is to be sent to me as a check.

He can political route himself some time he doesn't have now. He should have bought the short term disability like the rest of us responsible people.

If I’m reading this right… what a piece of shit.

I miss a lot of work due to something similar going on. Thankfully, my job isn’t exactly critical. They can get by without me. As a result, when we have company functions where catered food is provided, I opt to go last and take little, I skip the desserts and let others who bust their asses reap the rewards. It would never occur to me to try to buy out a lottery, let alone enter for fear of winning when someone who works harder deserves a real shot at it. I’m grateful just to have a job at a really understanding company that allows me to work to my limited potential when I’m able.

Some people.

Have you considered that the other employees who stuffed the ballot for him did it for the same reason you gave him your vacation hours in the first place? Because he has leukemia.

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Just curious, did HR obtain confirmation that he has a medical condition requiring the time off?

I'm asking because it might seem brash/petty if you withdraw your super kind donation over the competition. But if he hasn't provided documentation of the illness, then it's a different matter.

I donated to a couple employees in the past. I later learned one might have been scamming the system just a bit. They since changed the policy and can't donate anymore.

It's very nice of you to have made that donation.

Yeah, he has documentation. The treatments make him sick.

He did the ballot box stuffing as a "joke", but it pissed off already pissed off people who made an honest effort.

I’ve seen at work where one can donate time to others, vacation, maybe ‘sick time’. I try to do a little evaluation 1st.

Yeah, a full-blown illness with them or a child is one thing. I can’t help but think over the years of some bugging out with extra time off during the busy season.

I have a bunch of sick time built up, to much most would say. The day we leave it just evaporates, not even a partial payout.

use your vacation. If you get it and give it away you are crazy!!!

And since you donated it secretly he doesn't even know you did it for him.

I had enough after a co worker's wife died. My organization had a bake sale for him. My wife and I spent an afternoon making cup cakes and selling them. Then my co workers complained that the 1 per cupcake was too much and I ended up buying my own cupcakes. I later found out that he got half a million in life insurance and was getting SS for his 3 kids. Less than a month later. he bought a harley, hot tub, and a dodge challenger. And started dating a woman he met off tinder. After that I promised myself I would be donating anything to co-workers

I know exactly how you feel. I had an experience that made me feel the same.

Back in 2006, while trucking across country, I80 closed in Sinclair, WY due to bad weather. It was a cluster as trucks were trying to get parked in the truck stop. There was already about eight inches of snow on the ground. Two female truckers were jack-knifed trying to back in a spot (this will get you stuck PDQ). I was already parked and was heading to the restaurant with my ten year old boy, when we walked back to my truck, got a hydraulic jack and chains, and got them parked. It took about thirty minutes of working on that truck in a snowstorm so bad it was snowing sideways.

The female truckers were later sitting in a booth near us, but were unaware of our presence. Overhearing them, one said “Fuck Bush. I hope every soldier in Iraq is killed.” My cousin had been killed that fall, and my youngest brother had just deployed. It was then that it made me question my generosity.

I have come to believe that being generous is of benefit to me as much as it is to others. I try to be generous because it is the right thing to do. I don’t give money to street hustlers, but I do give to well known organizations. Some of my generosity may not be received by people I would like, but I feel that being a giving person is something that I want to be. I commend the OP for his past generosity, and I hope this incident doesn’t permanently suppress his generous nature.

"if" he did it as a joke, he would have stepped up, said so, and let the actual "winner" have it.

I know how you are, and I hate that your good efforts are repaid like this.

I've learned from past incidents.
Worked with someone who had a blind son and needed funds for surgery. Our agency threw a fundraiser for him and he promptly showed up several weeks later with a new boat. That was it for me. If I knew firsthand that someone was a sick time abuser and subsequently needed time, they did NOT get it from me.

Saw something similar in my last company (was a blind son). Excuse/reason was to give the boy an opportunity to be off shore.

Gotta admit, that was the nicest 26' boat I had ever seen - when renting one a few times a year was a reliable option without the re-occurring costs associated with a trailer (registration), boat maintenance/upkeep, insurance, etc. Wink

My last job was a Union job.

The Union would ask for hours to be donated for so and so. It was always for the person that used every single sick and vacation hour the paycheck it was issued. And the same ones that didn't spend the $4 a month for disability insurance.

Comes around, goes around.

That would have chapped my ass big time also.

I think one lesson that is being overlooked is that you need to take your vacation. As you have said you have EARNED it. That means you TAKE IT.

No one is so important that they can't take the vacation that they have EARNED. I couldn't tell you how many people I work with who don't take their allotted vacation because they are "too important" or "too busy" and have seen many of them get screwed later in their career and then realize they where just a number like everyone else.

We had a female cop who knew to the minute how much sick time she had…she missed work all the time…the rest of us saved ours knowing that over the long term we could retire earlier.

She wound up getting really really sick and didn’t have time…the freaking city sent out a request for time for so and so from the police and could you donate any spare time….when I made it clear she wasn’t getting a second from me I was labeled an asshole. (Prolly for a lot of other reasons too). I tried to explain she was always out for migraines, or her goldfish was depressed, or some other shit and we had to work short because she was a slacker…doesn’t matter I’m still the asshole.
