In the name of all that's good and holy, there are some things that should NOT be sweet.

Meat (particularly BBQ)
Cheese (chevre with pineapple or mango??? Ewe!!!)
Pickles (sweet pickles are vile)
Ice Tea (Southerners are just plain wrong)
Corn Bread (Northerners are even more wrong, it's "corn bread" not "corn cake")
Sub-Sandwich Bread (Irish Supreme Court ruled that Subway's bread had so much sugar it qualified as a pastry)
Burger Buns (Chick-fil-A and McDonalds are as bad as Subway)
Ketchup (so sweet it goes better with ice cream than french fries)

Even the things that are supposed to be sweet are made way TOO sweet.

Then we wonder why diabetes is exploding. Hint, it's not the meat, except for candied meat. Maybe it's that.

I was going to contribute corn bread. I was heartened to see that you already had it.

I don’t like sweet candy either. The only candy that I keep on hand is Ghirardelli 100% cacao. I allow myself a single half-ounce square per day.

Hehe - at first glance, I agreed w/ you.

But then I got to thinking:
Meat - but I like sweet and sour pork and a Japanese dish "buta no kakuni" which is pork belly simmered in basically sweet, soy sauce, sake until all the liquid is gone. And there is a similar chinese pork dish with 5 spice and sugar. And then there is maple syrup and bacon.....

Pickles - I actually frequently add hot sauce (Aardvark) and sugar (brown sugar) to my jar of Claussen whole pickles. I like when they are sour, salty, sweet, spicy. And there are a variety of Japanese, Thai and Korean pickles (not necessarily cucumbers) that have sweetness to them - sweet, salty and/or spicy. Some are naturally sweet - like korean kimchee made with the white part of watermelon rinds.

I like southern sweet tea but in limited quantities - like a quart per sitting. And not all the time. Then I switch to just plain ice tea. I agree, though, in that I usually just drink plain ice tea (or w/ milk). Somewhat for the natural taste but also healthier (less sugar).

I like corn bread with butter and honey - does that count? Or is that okay?

I like sweet bread (pan leche or hawaiian bread) but not for sandwiches - for french bread.

Agree that most american cakes are way to sweet, especially the icing (like buttercream - makes the roof of my mouth itch). I like Japanese cakes better in that respect. Except for certain things like Molten Fudge Cake which Japan can't get right.

And agree with most american chocolates as well. Except snickers. Dark chocolate is okay. Truffles are okay. I like european chocolates much better.

Chex Mix.

Unknowingly had it once and almost spit it out. Maybe they don’t make it anymore. That was a long time ago.

I agree with a lot. I do like sweet cornbread as it is all I've really ever been fed.

Pork belly burnt ends are super sweet but damn meat candy is wonderful. But you can't really eat a lot of it. I do prefer savory bbq.

I had no idea on Subway bread but never really cared for it, and maybe the sugar explains that.

When I went keto I started noticing how sweet everything is.

These go to eleven.

I like BBQ, pickles, tea, and cornbread in a variety of ways, including with some sweetness sometimes. I do agree that many versions that you get in restaurants are way too sweet though.

Certain pizza crusts are also sweetened. This is a foul abomination. Whoever thought this up needs to be handcuffed, his dick put in a vise, & the room set on fire.

ETA, The list of things in my world which can be both sweet and savory is VERY short.

I actually toned that down just a tad.

Meat- many Asian meat dishes have a sweetness to the taste, Japanese yakiniku, Korean bulgogi, Thai basil beef, etc. And I love everyone of them.

Cheese- I agree, no sweet cheese for me.

Pickles- I love good sweet and spicy pickles

Ice tea- love sweet tea, but I don't drink a lot of it.

Corn bread- with honey and butter, yum.

You DO realize those are fightin' words? And it's NOT "iced tea" in the South...it's "Sweet Tea"

I also notice how sickly sweet fast food is in general but the buns do have a lot of sugar. I think it's something to do with giving people a quick hit of flavor or to make up for sub-par ingredients inside the bun.

The most disgusting one I ever tried was BK's new chicken sandwich. EVERY SINGLE THING in that sandwich had a ton of sugar in it; the damn chicken, the bun, the sauce. BLECCCCH

Yep. I love Thai food, and a lot of Thai dishes utilize the sweetness of things like pineapple, lime, and coconut to offset/complement the spice level.

But I agree that BBQ meat shouldn't be sweet. Instead, give me a spicy dry rub, or better yet just simple Texas-style salt-and-pepper. But don't overdo it... The meat should speak for itself.

And while I'm on the soapbox, BBQ shouldn't need sauce at all. Sauce is just a crutch to cover up poor quality and/or cooking mistakes.

The reason that most BBQ joints slather sauce on everything is because they cook everything in huge batches beforehand, and then reheat it as needed to fulfill orders, but this process dries out the meat, so they top it with sauce to cover up the excessive dryness. Also because the average consumer has now come to expect/demand sauce with their BBQ. Which is a shame, because those in the habit of dousing their BBQ in sauce will never get to experience how truly orgasmic the flavor of just simply prepared meat and a few spices can be. Similar to how many folks, no matter how good or expensive the steak is, will slather it with steak sauce before even trying it.

Dang! I make that once a week; how could I forget that. Secret tip - I add sugar but I also use a can of coke in the marinade for sweetness and as a tenderizer. Others use things like kiwi (that's too expensive for me).

I like sweet cornbread smothered with butter (but then I'm a Northerner) Smile

Usually drink water when we're out, but occasionally have unsweetened tea.

I have an extreme dis-like for frosting or glazes. Krispy Kreme doughnuts are gross. Frosting from cup cakes or cake gets scraped off.

However, real whipped cream on chocolate cake, that's a different story Big Grin

I completely agree with this for good quality meat. While I don't mind a little BBQ sauce once in awhile, the ribs I make need zero sauce.

Made NY Strips for the crew when we were fishing in Canada - my nephew asked what seasoning did you use? Fresh ground salt and pepper, grilled over lump charcoal. It didn't hurt that I sliced them nice and thick from a NY strip roast either...

It depends. I'll disagree on pickles and ice tea. Corn bread, I've had honey on it.

What I can't get into is chicken and waffles. That to me is an unholy alliance.

Sweet salad dressing (or at least a kind not supposed to be sweet) is gross too. Why did they turn blue cheese or ranch or Italian into pancake syrup? Why???

That's pretty much all bottled salad dressings anymore, I think it acts as a preservative.
