92fstechGM Passlock Security System
I've had it with this stupid thing. It's a 24 year-old basic work truck. Not something that needed a security system in the first place, even when it was new. Everything mechanical still works great. But I'm trying to take the boys to the lake and the damn thing won't start because some dimwit engineer decided to install a crappy security system that fails, and then you can't start your own truck. VERY common problem with these.
So now it's sit here and do the 30 minute relearn so I can start my own stupid truck. I'd like to spend that 30 minutes alone with the retard who though this was a good idea. Just me, him, and a baseball bat. It's just like the post-2007 AFM cylinder deactivation that tears the lifters and cams up in LS motors...these assholes apparently didn't have enough to do in the early 2000s so they sat around around and came up with ways to screw up a design that already worked great

.
It's been a recurring issue in my truck for years, with irregular frequency. It usually only happens once or twice a year, and I've tried a few different fixes during that time and thought I had it fixed. It hasn't acted up in over a year. Then last week I tried to go help a buddy with a tree and it wouldn't start. I actually bought resistors this week to bypass the stupid thing, but haven't done it yet. Guess that's on the agenda for this afternoon.

92fstechWell, sometimes seemingly negative things work out in your favor. I was trying to get out on the lake this morning because it's supposed to rain this afternoon. Right after I finished my first post, we got a pop-up shower out of nowhere and it started pouring. If the truck had started, we'd have been out in that.
So the forecast has now changed and it's supposed to rain and storm the rest of the day. Boating is out. But I did tear the column apart and splice in that resistor, and did the relearn so the truck starts now. Hopefully for good.

hudrIs this the “security system” that works off a resistor in the key? And the ECM has to see that resistance value to let the vehicle crank?
Ah…just read the rest of the post…
Yeah, I had to do that to my 03 Buick. I also just cut the wires and soldered in the appropriate resistor.
What a pain. The engineer that came up with that needs an old fashioned country ass whupping’.

.38supersigYeah,
Had that happen with mine. Wire came loose and I had to solder it back.
The bad news? Attempts to crank overpressurized the brake system and blew out a $359 sensor.

92fstechWell, the national weather service got it backwards. Wasn't supposed to rain this morning, but it did, and was supposed to this afternoon but it didn't. Ended up taking the boys to the range and we shot suppressed .22 for a bit, and then made it out on the boat after all. It was too hot to fish but we jumped in the water and even the dog had fun. Truck started and ran great the whole time, so hopefully it's fixed for good.

The Buick used a key with a wafer chip, the VATS system, a resistor, one of fifteen different values.
Passlock, the system used in the trucks used a magnet and a sensor built into the ignition lock cylinder, nothing built into the key either the wafer or the transponder built into the key head under the plastic.
The two Passkey systems, the keys are readily identifiable by one of two markings on the shank below the head, one is a circle with a plus sign in the middle of it and the other is the letters PK3 stamped on the shank.

texassierraI had a 91 Camaro with this system. It had the chip looking thing embedded in the key. It would fail occasionally at what always seemed to be the absolute worst time. I would be in a rush and bam the damn thing wouldn't do anything but show the alarm symbol on the dash. Had to wait 5 or 10 minutes to try again. Agrevating as hell. It may have been a coincidence but it appeared to always be raining or really humid when it occurred.
