I'd rather be hated for who I am than loved for who I am not |
My wife isn't the most technologically savy. I came home after a long day and she was upset that her IOS store was disabled not allowing her to update any of her apps. Unfortuantly they won't tell you what wrong instead giving you a list of things it could be.. So changed the password. nothing. Looked for charges/outstanding bill nothing. Finally give up and use the support chat. Jump through a bunch of hoops to prove who I am and then they say its a charge. I say we havent made any what is it and how much. Without answering they say it was a mistake and reinstate the app store. The next day all of her passords she has stored are all gone. Of course she blames me for them disappearing. I have no idea if it is related to anything that I did. Meanwhile, I have passwords that seem to quit working. Had my chase account quit working even after I changed the password and then it wouldnt accept it. I have 1password and still seem to have problems. So tired of 2 party authetication passphrases and all the bullshit. I can see society collapsing just from the internet going out for a extended time. everything is online. medical, work, finances, insurance.

Thank you Very little |
Feel for you, we had some charges we couldn't reconcile on the wife's Amex, disputed them, and Amex charged them back. Apparently they were valid charges on Amazon from 60 days ago and just showed up on a later AMEX bill. Amazon shut down the Prime account, shut down the 5 FireSticks, and other Amazon devices since they are tied to that Prime account. Similar to shutting the guy out of his house for an alleged racial slug a while back. We got it all straight, log back in, not only do they close your account, they wipe all CC data out, every card we had, gone, had to put them back in, Firesticks, wiped clean, apps gone and had to log in and reinstall apps, reenter passwords, the devices for the lights we have that run through Alexa, poof, gone... Soon as I get a chance all the Amazon connected stuff is going away, Smart TV's already in a few rooms, the few that use Firesticks are getting ROKU's or Apple TV's

I work hard at my vocation to keep us on the best fiber and fiber products available from any LEC or MSO. But all the shit that can go wrong on the OSI, especially above layer 3 is just maddening, beyond maddening. I’m sick of it too. I’m tired of that fucking password manager thing I use too. I need to get off my ass and just write them all down in a notebook, and get a small fireproof lockbox document thing to throw into the gun safe and fuck it all. The older I get the more I’m likely to do things the old fashioned way, even if it’s more difficult. When Dish started charging too damn much I went to streaming my movie channels. And each one of those ho’s has its own password. Each banking account. Amazon and all retailers. Fuck it’s just too much. Oh and throw in the home automation stuff, which is actually beneficial and extremely useful in life, each one of those things needs its own unique password. Then throw in the “2 factor” authentication. I’m going to move at some point and will want to change my phone number. That will be a hoot with all this bullshit. I watch this guy sometimes on YT. He’s a code breaker and hacks the Indian scammers, enables their webcam, triangulates their location, down to the building, and sometimes the floor. I can’t stop watching it. They are the reason for all this bullshit we have to endure. What am I doing? I'm talking to an empty telephone

Part of it made even me go "Whut?," and I'm a tech geek. LEC: Local Exchange Carrier (local TelCom provider) MSO: Multiple Systems Operator (e.g.: cable or fiber) OSI: Open Systems Interconnect The "OSI" thing is really pointlessly obtuse alphabet soup, in this context. This is what it is: What is the OSI Model? As for password managers: I've been using the same password manager ever since we moved from Palm Centro's to Android phones, then iThings: Password Safe. I think maybe twice, in all those years, was something not in there I'd have sworn I put in there. Maybe. Finally convinced my wife to use it after she'd misplaced login credentials for the second or third time. Now she uses it faithfully. I had that happen to me with HBO Max. I cancelled the service. We're getting there. "America is at that awkward stage. It's too late to work within the system,,,, but too early to shoot the bastards." -- Claire Wolfe "If we let things terrify us, life will not be worth living." -- Seneca the Younger, Roman Stoic philosopher

I hate the two factor BS, I keep telling every website to trust the devices I am using, and sure enough, the next time I’m back to two factor BS. I’m using a PW manager, but I use a password scheme I can remember, unlike the computer generated ones no one could possibly r3member. Because if the PW manager goes TU, I can still figure out my passwords, given time.

This used to be my fear about using a password manager before I started using one. Then I figured I can simply reset my password. So I use 30 character passwords whenever allowed. Only for streaming services where I might have to enter the PW via the tv remote do I use the memorable password feature; not that I remember them but it’s easier to input a string of words connected by symbols. "It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Yawns. It’s actually the basis for everything that happens in IT. Alphabet soup, it is not. I design fiber optic networks and the last thing I’d call myself is a tech geek. What am I doing? I'm talking to an empty telephone

Thanks for this thread Ronin101. Sorry for your problems, but I got a few good chuckles from the thread, including its title. As for PW managers, I would hate to be without one in this hacker-plagued world. They make things so much easier – and safer. Serious about crackers

Get Off My Lawn |
I took proactive steps awhile back to try to minimize my cyberspace footprint; got off the smartphone merry-go-round and switched to a dumb flip phone relic a few years back, and I have never bought a phone app in my life. I have old-fashioned cable TV, no streaming (except for Amazon Prime which I rarely use). I only do banking by visiting my two bank branches, they all know me and are very helpful and kind. I try to do as much shopping at brick and mortar stores as possible, but Amazon is popular in our household. Etc, etc. I am kind of a 21st century luddite and happier without much of the popular digital trappings. I rarely pick up and look at my phone, my friends and family know I don't instantly respond to texts or phone messages. Hell, I occasionally will forget and leave it at home when I'm out and about, sometimes it will sit in the same counter space spot for days (it needs to be charged every two weeks). I only browse on my desktop computer occasionally throughout the day. No social media, except for a few forums. I still go to the library once a week to look for books or DVD discs. My son tells me it seems I'm trying to hang on to a lifestyle from decades ago and he is not really wrong. ^^^^^^^ How many paper checks do you write in an average year? It wasn’t that long ago that I wrote a dozen or more. But now, the most recent entry in my check register is dated 5/14/2021. Serious about crackers
