My negative rant has actually turned into a positive. I love seeing neighbors helping each other. I'm in the East this year at my Lodge, I'm starting a program where we're going to help some elderly members or younger guys with recent health concerns with their Spring clean up. First step would to identify who needs help, then break up into teams. Light tree trimming, trimming bushes, cutting grass, and edging. Should be fun. Between the Lodge and myself, I have access to five walk behinds, my tractor, and misc line trimmers and blowers. I have a small trailer that I could use to deliver equipment to the sites. I guess that's why I keep my stuff maintained, I need it to work when I need it!!!

On the other side of me , opposite the jackass who didn't return my grinder was a newlywed couple that bought their first home . These were the neighbors you could only dream of . One day there was a knock on my door . " Mr. Dan , would you mind if I borrowed your shovel ? " No problem . A couple of hours later . Another knock . " I returned your shovel ." A week later " Can I use your wheelbarrow ? " Again , he told me when he returned it . I finally told him to just go get what he needed and don't worry about telling me . They were good kids and I missed them when we moved .

General rule I follow is to not loan tools out unless you can afford to lose them.

While my tools don't make me money, they do save me money.

I'm lucky. Neighbor across the street is German car mechanic. Never need to borrow anything from him because if I start to mention it he fixes it for me. I loaned him my pressure washer once and he steam cleaned it and changed the oil before returning it.

After our major flood event of Aug 2016 one of our next door neighbors were living some where else while clean up and rebuilding process took place.. I was mowing their yard for them... small front and back took maybe 1/2 hr to complete. After several attempts to make me accept payment for the grass cutting.. They finally got me to accept 2 packages of smoked pork and or deer sausages.. And because i continued to mow the grass even after they moved back into the house the continued ever so often to bring 2 or 3 frozen packages of the sausages that she got from her father who was a butcher at a country meat market... For a couple of years they got off cheap and my tummy stayed happy. ........................ drill sgt.

I have found and firmly believe that someone who doesn't take care of their stuff sure in hell is not going to take care of someone else's.

Just for the record I am anal about my belongings.

I’ve got a neighbor who scared me from ever borrowing anything. I borrowed his pressure washer years ago. Soap water and sponge washed when I returned it. Few years later we were talking about loaning tools. I asked my neighbor if he was happy when I returned his pressure washer. He shrugged his shoulders and said it was just alright.
I won’t borrow a screwdriver or cup of sugar from him.

I just bought a Gravely ZT HD 60” not loaning that to anyone. I bought a new 2023 as they were 20% off. I have been watching the prices for a year and they are usually $250-$300 off. I was out the door for the price of a Ariens.

Statistically, they are excellent credit risks.

I probably have disappointed neighbors but I don’t believe in loaning out lawn equipment. My hard earned money went into the purchase and I refuse to be told that “sorry I don’t know what happened, but something broke”.
