The wife and I have taken to playing canasta for two. A game is to 5000 and takes several hands to reach that much. I've now lost all three games over the course of a couple of weeks.

No spousal abuse but some serious pouting. I even failed to say the obligatory "congratulations" after the last drubbing opting for "ah,fuck" instead. I did manage to deal the next hand for the fourth game instead of storming off. I'm only down 300 points!

My wife kicked my ass at Dr.Mario yesterday, but I returned the favor and smoked her at Mario Kart.

Here's a tip for you, as well as one good for kids everywhere if they actually play card/board/similar games.

Winner puts up everything. This has defused so many otherwise frustrated kids endings, and as they get older they generally will help even if they lost. That's a win/win!

While residing in an over 55 retirement community in Mesa,AZ,

I learned how to play shuffleboard.

7 very delightful couples who were very enjoyable under many other social activities became very stressful to be around at the courts.

It didn't matter weather they were on opposing teams or on the same team.

" Shove it this way! Why did you do that? You should have did this! "
No kidding,

A real learning experience.

My father and I have annual cribbage tournaments. We usually accumulate about 100 games each year. He has been the champ for the lastest five years at the least. Father's Day weekend has been an unusually skillful or lucky time for him. He has been winning on that weekend such that his lead is very difficult to catch later in the year.

So rather than focusing on being happy by winning, which I do play for, I focus on the improbable combinations of cards that occur.

For example, my father was dealt four fours and turned up the seven card. That is very lucky. A couple of games he was dealt four fives, but did not turn up a ten/face card.

Another time I had a perfect hand. The odds of a perfect hand are around 1/250,000.

Another time I put the Jack and Queen of Spades in the crib. My father put the 8 and 9 of Spades in the crib. The turn up card hit in the middle, the 10 of Spades!! The improbability of that is something like winning Mega Millions. Even less probable because of human agency in choosing the cards.

If your Missus continues to win then maybe focus on being happy for her success. Or switch to cribbage. It has been stated that cribbage is 2/3 luck and 1/3 skill. However as my father says, you cannot be skillfull if you have no luck to build on. Maybe Canasta is similar. Ya'll ever play Casino?

No, not yet. I looked it up and it is similar but simpler than canasta. Canasta is just rummy on steroids . It becomes harder to score as you proceed, which allows the losing player to catch up. All the games have been close.

Decades ago we played Bridge, which takes way more skill than luck.

Nowadays we are more likely to play Uno or Skip-Bo with the granddaughter. She usually wins .
