I had to pass 5 cars this morning on the right on my drive in to work, yes I know it's not really allowed but people simply WILL NOT move over anymore around here in SE PA, Philly region.

I don't know if it's ignorance or they think they are in the right or what but they sit there going 50-60 in that left lane where the flow of traffic is easily 70-75 and the right lane is clear to move over into.

It's maddening I tell you. Confused

This is every day in FL. Damn near EVERYONE is a retiree or from another country just putting along going no where and no care about when they'll get there. I always think how cool it would be if I were the old cartoon character "Stretch Armstrong" I would stretch my arm to their car and through the window and SLAP DA SHIT OUTTA THEM! Then retract my arm and laugh my way down the road.

Nope they refuse to move over, even if you use your emergency flashers.

We started leaving 12-15 minutes early for the 22 mile trips in to the big city .

I don't know how passing on the right is not allowed if the traffic blocking idiots are on the left lane.

But, yeah, I hear you. I enjoy the right lane now most times as I'm not in a hurry to go anywhere.

It's even more infuriating when traffic is sparse and the car in the left lane is JUST PACING with the traffic on the right and there's a mile ahead of the car that is free and clear.

While the law is generally keep right except to pass, I've not seen a state where it's actually illegal to pass on the right. Is that thing in PA?

Generally when I encounter this now a days it's because the person has their nose buried in their phone. I would say it's about 75 to 80% of the time.
Also in central Florida as FLKev said it is so true, and it also includes all the tourist who are lost.

It's almost as aggravating as the sonsabitches that do 137MPH when there's a passing lane and then promptly slow down to 10 under in the two-laner.

It should be legal to run them off the road...and shoot them...after hanging them by the neck until dead.

I seem to recall that in some states it is a ticketable offense to travel in the left lane at a speed slower than the median speed of traffic. Any LEO input, verification, or opinion would be greatly appreciated.

Many years ago, I think it was around 1968, I was on a limited access highway in Central Tennessee, and there were signs stating that the minimum speed in the left lane was 70 mph.

Florida bill banning left lane drivers clears Senate committee

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — A bill seeking to penalize drivers who “continuously” travel in the left-hand lane without the intent to pass moved closer to the governor’s desk Thursday, clearing a Senate transportation appropriations committee.

The bill, filed by Sen. Keith Perry (R-Gainesville) on Feb. 1 and related to HB 421, declares vehicles would be prohibited from continuously traveling “in the furthermost left-hand lane of certain roadways” like streets, and highways with two or more lanes and a posted speed limit of at least 65 mph.

First 2023 Atlantic hurricane season forecast released
“A driver may not continuously operate a motor vehicle in the furthermost left-hand lane, except when overtaking and passing another vehicle, when preparing to exit the road, street, or highway, or when otherwise directed by an official traffic control device,” the bill states.

This law would not apply to authorized emergency vehicles and vehicles engaged in highway
maintenance or construction operations.

Drivers who are stopped for the violation would receive a ticket. If passed, the bill would take effect on Jan. 1, 2024.

Florida already requires drivers to travel in “The RIGHT Lane” to “prevent impeding the flow of traffic,” the Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles’ website states.

Like the Sunshine State, others have enacted similar “keep right” laws to keep traffic moving in the fast lane, but the fine print varies. In South Dakota, it’s the responsibility of “slow-moving” vehicles to keep to the right. Since the left lane is meant to be used for passing, in Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Texas, passing on the right is prohibited on some roadways.

I guess it's not actually illegal to pass on the right. Maybe I'm thinking of Europe where it's IIRC a big no-no

Pennsylvania General Assembly

Title 75

§ 3304. Overtaking vehicle on the right.

(a) General rule.--The driver of a vehicle may overtake and pass upon the right of another vehicle only under one of the following conditions:

(1) When the vehicle overtaken is making or about to make a left turn, except that such movement shall not be made by driving off the berm or shoulder of the highway.

(2) Upon a roadway with unobstructed pavement of sufficient width for two or more lines of vehicles moving lawfully in the direction being traveled by the overtaken vehicle, except that such movement shall not be made by driving off the roadway.

(b) Limitation.--No passing movement under this section shall be made unless the movement can be made in safety.

Cross References. Section 3304 is referred to in sections 1535, 3326, 3327 of this title.

Could be worse, seems like they are fairly stupid around Athens, Ga.

Seems everytime I travel 441 south of there, the left hand lane is relegated to 40 MPH by all the dumb shits going to Watkinsville.

After that, it is a speed limit ride all the way to Macon. Confused

I've done that. Asshole in an F250 towing 3 off road Jeeps on a flatbed in the left land on I-70 coming out of Pittsburg. He had a 2 mile backup behind him because he was slowing to 50 mph on the hills. It took me about 15 minutes using gaps in the right 2 lanes to work myself in front of him upon which I slowed to 45 MPH. As soon as he dropped into the #2 lane I went down with him and allowed a big stream of cars and trucks go past him. When there was a break in the traffic he'd move back into the left lane with me right smack dab in front of him and cruise along at 70. Pretty soon traffic would start to stack up behind him due to his slowing on hills and I would slow him down to 45 where we would repeat my trapping him in the #1 or #2 lane until a gap opened up in the Left lane. Then we would cruise along at 70 with him doing his slowdown on the hills bit and I would watch the traffic stack up behind him. When it got pretty long I would repeat my slowing and trapping him in the #1 or #2 lane depending on the lane count. The stupid fuck never did catch on that perhaps it would be wise to move to the right and allow traffic to pass on the hills. Unfortunately I had to turn off at I-77 so he was able to resume blocking everyone but I was really tempted to keep this up all the way to Columbus.

Yeah, I know it was a bit risky but I had a big power to weight advantage and State cops just don't seem to do anything about these assholes. As a result you can see some really scary shit in the traffic backup they create. And yeah I was being a real prick but I was able to see the results in my rear view in the hills and for a while I managed to keep traffic moving smoothly by targeting the problem vehicle.

I've stopped counting.

Just as bad as people who don't understand the zipper merge and straddle the centerline to block traffic in the lane that still has a mile and half to go before it ends

Houston was almost entirely 3+ lane freeways in each direction, and then they built the 184 mile Grand Pkwy to be the third loop around Houston passing through 7 counties. Houstonians have no idea how to drive on a highway 2-lanes in each direction and just camp out in whichever lane they're in:
  • Driving in the right lane and there is traffic entering at an on-ramp? Screw everyone else, they're staying in the right lane even though the left lane was available and switching lanes is something a decent human being would do.
  • Driving in the left lane 10 mph slower than traffic? Screw everyone else, they're not changing lanes even though they're driving the same speed as the right lane and switching lanes is something a decent human being would do.
  • Driving in the left lane at speed of traffic and get some brain dead text from family/friend/acquaintance? Screw everyone else, they're slowing down 20 mph to read and reply even though ignoring the phone is something a decent human being would do.

If you’re passing people you aren’t merging, you are racing forward to cut in front of people who have already zippered.

I hope they enforce it. The ticket revenue would hire dozens of state troopers. I bet using the probable cause of camping in the right hand lane would lead to many arrests or tickets for those without insurance, illegals, suspended licenses, etc.
