It's not new but seems more and more not accepting CA$H . Eek

Was at the golf course and went to pay for some range balls, "umm, we don't take cash". Confused
Me: " umm, your loss.... ??"
Luckily, the relinquished and accepted my funds.

Restaurants, stadiums concessions, etc.... WTF
Banks do not want cash either, ID'ing on a deposit, charging for accepting cash and discouraging use.

I'm waiting for someone to say "No cash, and 3% extra for credit cards". Frown

IMO, not generally in favor of government intervention but seems to me that our countries currency should be required to be accepted as a matter of law at at least in local transactions.
Outside of the general lack of common sense you could interject the conspiracy part...control...etc.....
But I won't go there.

I agree, but in some cases can see the point.
Airlines & stadium concessions, it surely speeds up the process & reduces chances of theft & such.
Other problem with the airlines, is they won't even take your card [United] have to do it via the United app with your car stored.

Otherwise, though, I'm on board with you.

Cash is a pain in the ass for most businesses. Slows the line, theft, need to have change, more backend work balancing totals.

Its one thing to give the plumber $250 cash for a job. Its another when the plumber works for a company and says the job is $257.39. He needs to bring back $257.39 to the shop.

Cue the "globalists want a cashless society" tirades.

The OP did make me think, which can be good or bad, but how many of people's money problems wouldn't ever materialize if every face-to-face transaction could only be done with cash?

I suppose it would lead to more robbery etc., but there was a long history prior to credit card's existence.

If you’re a US business, you should be required to accept US currency.

Couple of months a go one of our local Wal Mart locations was accepting card only payments for several days because their cash counting machines were down (not working) and waiting on repair parts so that would allow them to accept cash payments. Cash payments lend themselves more easily subject to theft or misplaced payments vs card payments that should be traceable. ................. drill sgt.

I stopped at a SUNOCO station today to get some gas for the lawnmower and when I went to pay in cash the owner told me he gives a 5-cent per gallon discount if pay in cash. That was a nice pleasant surprise.

Several of the local cafes here give a cash discount, and one of the best only accepts cash. And when the At&t fiber optic internet service goes out (roughly every couple of months) you better have cash, because nobody can take a credit card or a check.

I have never paid for a meal or gas with a CC. Except for the internet the only
place to see my card is Kroger and Home Depot.
Now even half the self checkout lanes are card only.
If I were to go to a restaurant THEY better make sure I'm aware of it. At the end of
the dinner all I have is cash, what are they going to do? Call the police?
I've never had a card hacked.

At some point a brainiacs found out that nobody wanted to pay extra for the labor involved in counting money.

I too believe cash is king.
Example:

I had to get a second credit card at my tiny town bank.
Because Costco sells cheap gas but!
Only with a C.C..

So now, I
Pay for gas at Costco on Monday,
Then
I stop by the tiny town bank on Friday and pay for the gas I purchased on Monday.

Can life get any more back asswsrds?

They ( retailers) claim it's cheaper than handling money.

Starting next week,
I am buying a gift card at the main store to carry in my Costanza wallet.

Alleviating the need for the tiny town c.c.

You live in crime ridden Houston and can't figure out why a business doesn't want cash?

Eliminating cash means the owner and their employees will likely never end up at gunpoint. Cash businesses get robbed more.

Harris County (ie the county with the actual city of Houston) has a woke DA and woke judges. Other than armed Texans, there is little or no penalty for armed robbery. I live in an adjacent county, but when I go to Houston I prefer going to a business with the “no cash on premises” sign on the front door.

The first time I lived in Houston it used to be much safer than Chicago, but that has changed and per capita Houston is 1095 vs Chicago's 1098 violent crimes per 100,000 people. Syndicated Houston-based talk radio host Michael Berry pretty much sums up the Houston situation with this t-shirt he sells on his site:

Recall “ I will fear no evil” a Sci-Fi that pretty actually described the way things are going.
On the subject of cash, the government confessed that it would never go away. It was needed for untraceable bribes and as a lubricant for society.

I work for myself... alone and go to peoples houses and when done get paid... I don't accept credit cards... Check is what I prefer but will of course take cash... I have broken down as of late and can be paid by Venmo... as for cents (of which I have very little).... I never charge odd amounts... I either round down or up to the nearest $5. If you are running a business where 2-4 dollars per transaction is going to make or break you... you need to do some serious refiguring. Adding sales tax to the listed price of a product is just stupid... it can be figured into your markup in the first place.... but people have drunk the kool-aid.

I don't think cash will ever go away, and it is 'legal tender for all debts, public and private' as the printing on those Federal Reserve Notes indicates.

That said, I have a container I fill with loose change every night. Pre-COVID, it filled up every couple years. Now, it's been almost four years since I last emptied it and it's maybe 10% full.

And no complaints, personally.

I get a 1.5% discount on all credit card transactions and get to use the bank's money for free till the bill gets paid in full every month. Plus if there's an issue, it gets resolved before I am out a dime because I can dispute charges with the bank.

So, unless there is a greater than 1.5% discount for cash and no prospect of a problem with the product/service, cash is actually worse for me than using the card.

I want it to be law that cash must be accepted. I believe in the word 'private' as it says on the reserve notes.

You don't have to lecture me Houston, been here since 1976. Eek

The gunpoint argument is a stupid argument.

It is also not why the vassssst majority of them that refuse do it - it is IMO, because they are only looking to their convivence and don't give a shit about the customer.
Now if you want to say the employees are too stupid to count out change - then you might have something. Frown

To top it off credit card related theft is only going to get worse.

It's my theory that larger corporations are accepting cash less and less to get this practice normalized and then incrementally get the sheep on board with 100% digital "currency". We will be financially enslaved if that happens. Well, more than we already are.

Totally off the subject, but….
This reminds me of a REALLY bad space vampire movie I watched years ago.
Credit card fraud had gotten so bad that all transactions were handled in cash, and the vampire part of the movie took place on a cargo ship that was hauling pallet upon pallet of cash between planets.

Now, back to our regularly scheduled thread.
