Some guys are plain assholes and don’t belong in the job. Some mature and grow out of it rather quickly.

On bikes with no lights: I dont recall actually pinching anyone for not having a bike light. But I often stopped riders for the violation. Heres why: My auto burglars often rode bikes. Often, the bike was stolen. I had a few dudes who rode through residential areas on bikes late at night looking for open garages to steal from. The occasional window peeper was bike mounted, too. And there was the safety thing, too. A bike makes a great criminal tool. It makes for a fast, silent way to commit crimes. I even had a serial rapist who would steal a bike before hitting his victims. End of Earth: 2 Miles Upper Peninsula: 4 Miles

That is literally the first thing our background investigators look at. And if their academy is worth a salt, it will continue to be checked. Even after all that... it will be a VERY uncomfortable conversation to have with internal affairs or in the chiefs office before he has to be escorted home to return his equipment. I’ll add that it’s mandatory at my agency to report social media policy violations if you see one. I’m pretty sure our intel folks routinely monitor for certain things, too. If he doesn’t figure out which way is up pretty quick, I’d expect him to have issues. I’n most agencies it’s pretty easy to get shitcanned during the academy. He will become a liability looking for a place to happen. If they find unacceptable social media posting, his lower posterior fanny will be gone.

That's what my LEO FB friends have done - and their posts are still neutral, non-controversial, apolitical ... ___________________________ Originally posted by Psychobastard: Well, we "gave them democracy"... not unlike giving a monkey a loaded gun.

Nah we're good with people like that. It's not even so much stupid postings, as it is the hard-headed can't take advice/criticism attitude.

Oh, AMEN TO THAT! We recently had one (on CPD) here that posted some WAY STUPID SHIT on instagram, facebook or whatever. HE got, and is getting, and will continue to get an epic (and well deserved) beatdown by his coworkers for a long, long, long time.... Think the "<<<ARE YOU SMOKING DOPE>>>" and "Gay Cake" thread that can not, nor will not ever be locked, all wrapped up in one. But that's out of the norm. Sure, we have a few that post some crazy and stupid stuff on whatever social media, and if they cant figure it out, that's on them. However, BY FAR, the newer generation that's coming on are exactly what you said- way too many kids that are: Hard headed, cant take advice / criticism, "why are you yelling at me Sarge?" "I know, I know!".... My answer is getting to be standard now, "You know what, kid, you're absolutely right. Do it your way!" Then when things don't quite work the way they planned, that's when the fun starts. Sometimes I can help them after that, sometimes I cant... Ill give them all a more than fair chance. But the ones that can't figure it out after the 3rd,4th,5th time, "Well Lad, you're on your own!" ______________________________________________________________________ "When its time to shoot, shoot. Just decided to go back and look at my facebook page to see what others would figure out about me from it.... the only thing I saw that might cause a 'red flag' to anti gun folks was when I announced I had been declared a domestic terrorist by San Francisco.... also I made a video of my condition two months after having a heart attack and if you look close there is a Sig P226 MK-25 laying on the still beside me.... He isnt smart enough and mature enough for the job. He is a loud mouth soldier, which works fine for soldiering, but not for LEO. ______________________________________________________ Often times a very small man can cast a very large shadow

I can promise you he didn’t do whatever he wanted in his army days. And after serving and still having that dumbass teenager attitude about it he doesn’t need to wear a badge. He’ll just get himself and the department sued or worse.

Saw a friend have his [unpaid] reserve deputy sheriff status revoked because he posted something about "thin skinned snowflakes looking for ways to be offended need to be handled with kit gloves" and the post was reported to the sheriff by someone who now fears being "accosted" by this type of deputy. You mean how does the potential agency get it? Similarly to a job requiring a clearance, almost all law enforcement jobs entail a significant background investigation. Some locals/states go back ten years, some go back to the “adult” age mark, some go back forever for certain things. Much of it is self reported, and not much of anything is out of bounds. Follow up is done by phone or in person interviews of people you list, then people they refer, and then people the investigator thinks would give interesting information. As well as standard database checks, etc. An agency can require all social media accounts. They can even require all log in information, in many cases. And if you don’t provide them you’re done. And if you lie and they find out later from someone else they interview, or simply by searching your information online, that you had accounts, not only are you done, but it is reported to whatever certifying body your state has (in some or many cases) that you lied. The certifying agency may suspend you from being able to be a sworn officer, potentially forever. I know for a fact that happens in my state. And if you apply to another agency the paperwork will be compared either at the agency or state level, and round you go. Between just searching your email, name, and phone number; and asking everyone they interview “Does Johnny Boy have any social media or networking accounts of which you are aware?”, they will most likely find it.
