Not the best way to get a day off work
Woke up yesterday and felt great. It was my scheduled day off, but I had four hours of OT details to work so I went in and did that in the morning, then went and drove a course for emergency vehicle operations training (probably the most fun thing left in this job, even though I'm in a big boat of a Tahoe!). Went home, ate lunch, walked the dog, and loaded a few hundred rounds of 9mm while I was waiting on FedEx to show up with my car parts from Rockauto. All was good, normal day.

FedEx finally got there about 4pm and I went out to the garage to start unboxing the parts when our of nowhere it hit me. Horrible stomach cramps, shaky, chills, the works. I went and laid down in bed, my wife piled blankets on me, and I was still shaking. I'm insulin dependent type 1 diabetic, so I checked my blood sugar and it was in the low 50s. I did my usual and ate some berries and yoghurt to try and bring it back up, but that did nothing and an hour later it was still low and the cramps were worse.

I texted my boss to give him a heads up that I had some kind of bug and wouldn't be in tomorrow. We also were supposed to host our church small group that night, and my wife texted them to warn them, but everybody opted to come anyway since I was planning to just stay in bed regardless. Blood sugar was still low and stomach was feeling worse, so about 5:45 I ate some rice (which I typically avoid because it's so high in carbs). Still no improvement.

About 6:45 I entertained the small group with sounds of purging from the bathroom. This continued in waves after they left until at least 10pm. At one point I spent a half hour lying on the floor in the bathroom contemplating that this was how I was going to die, or at least end up in the ER on IV fluids. I don't get sick much, and haven't been "puke sick" in years... definitely the first time since I've been on insulin. The way you typically deal with low blood sugar is to eat something, but when your digestive system is rejecting everything that goes in that doesn't work. I did manage to get it back up into the 70s by sucking on some candy.

It's 1:30 now and I'm feeling better. Fever and chills are gone. Cramps have subsided to general queasiness, I was able to keep some water down, and the blood sugar has come back up to 120. The fear of agonizing death has passed, but I'm still afraid to eat anything, and I'm going to let the boss go ahead and cover my shift because I don't need to risk a relapse/continuation of this on duty. But damn that was a horrible 10 hours. Frown

Good to hear you're getting better, but next time go to the ER!!! Diabetics immune systems are much weaker than non diabetics and blood sugar at 50 is really low. Especially for that duration of time despite eating sugar/carbs

That same “Oregon Trail” bug has run through my son’s family twice now. My two grandkids started preschool and day care this season.
Son asked me what they could do. I told him basically nothing as long as their little Petri dishes were co-mingling with everyone else’s little Petri dishes. Just keep all the usual re-hydrating stuff on hand.
I’m glad you survived. Like you, I have’t been that kind of sick in a while, and it always feels world ending when it happens.

Yeah, I remember when our kids started school. I don't think we've ever been as sick as we were that year. My wife did daycare in our home for another family for a couple of years and that was pretty bad, too. Children are disgusting.

I dunno...my immune system is pretty darn good. So good, in fact, that one day it got bored of having nothing else to do and decided to start killing off cells in my pancreas lol. I seriously never get sick...maybe an upper respiratory thing in the late fall or winter once a year that I just gut out until it goes away. What happened last night hasn't happened in years, and my body seems to have dealt with it pretty effectively, if not pleasantly. If it had continued for a few days I probably would have gone in just because of the dehydration concerns, but to go last night would have been even more miserable, unproductive, and incredibly expensive.

Yaaaah...Jimmy, let's not paint with a broad brush. This is the same broad categorization that makes me unable to get life insurance. I'm also a Type 1 and VERY rarely get sick. I can't stand when all diabetics get lumped together. WE ARE NOT ALL THE SAME. It's all about your level of control. If you have shit control, your body will start to fall apart and your immune system will suffer. If you have really good control, you're fine. From what I've seen, I'm a shitload healthier than a lot of "normies" with fully functioning pancreases.

92fstech, I feel the exact same way. I was diagnosed around 27, while I was running 2 miles a day (down to a 5 min mile) and hitting the gym every day. It was completely out of left field.

Glad that the worst is passed. Hope you feel fully better and back to normal soon without ill effects.

Glad it’s over and you are OK.

A week ago Monday, my son called both my wife and me from the bathroom in one of the buildings at his university. He said he felt fine that morning and felt fine in class until he didn’t. I told him go back to dorm and sent him a link to the university’s health center. He made it back to his dorm after a couple pit stops and was 100% back to normal the next day.

Sounds like maybe we got the same thing. Sudden onset, horrible while it was happening, and then pretty much over as quick as it came on. Glad he's doing better...it's not an experience I'd wish on anybody!

Yeah I think I’m going through that now. Tested negative for C19 so I’m just going to let it run its course.

What did you eat for lunch?

Homemade pizza on a low carb tortilla. Same thing I ate the day before with the same ingredients. No problems the first time, so I'm pretty sure that wasn't it

Well after trying to negotiate on a car that fits everything but the color we want for the past 3 days, I'm remembering what I hate car dealerships in general.

I don't care about Lojack. I don't care about nitrogen in the tires. I don't care about a tire or paint protection warranty. And your "free" oil changes would mean a 3 hour round trip to take advantage of.

The last straw was "this is the price if you finance through us" and resistance to just give me a price.
