Lazy closed captioning

ZSMICHAELLazy closed captioning
The Youtube captioning is at time hilarious. I was watching a clip on Vietnam and the NBA was over running the Marine Base. This must drive hearing impaired folks crazy. This should be an ADA issue, although I really dont know.

RawnyThe closed captioning on YT are all auto-generated. Given many instances of AI having trouble with pronunciations, it's not at all surprising it has trouble transcribing what it hears as well.

Of course since the NVA average height was 6'6"

Even when it's not auto-generated, it's either entered by people thinking meme misspelling is funny or they're plain idiots who can't spell.

mesabiI watched that same video last night and laughed at the NBA part. The spoken narration also had some noticeable pronunciation problems.

mindustrialWife’s car speaks mil’s name Cindie as: “sigh-en-die”. Now I call her that too.

We live just off Bunnell road. Accent on the second syllable, as in buh-NELL.
GPS pronounces it to rhyme with funnel, so now, of course, wife and I are pronouncing it like the GPS.

MikeNHIt's all AI-generated and can be absolute trash. Same with TV programming. At the gym in the morning I usually have my earbuds in watching something on my phone but occasionally I'll drift up to the TV to see what the news is lying about that morning and one day it was a military commentator talking about Bob Graham and what a disaster he/it had become. I was super confused until I realized they were talking about Bagram in Afghanistan. Back in the day I think it was done by a real person who could just rock at typing. Now it sucks.

Fly-SigThe gps nav in the German car pronounces a nearby street as "Vah gone Veal", which is of course "Wagon Wheel". We all now say it like a German.

We may not have to worry so much about AI taking over if this is the best it can do.

Black92LXBy lazy, I thought you meant slow. Was watching a movie and the captions were at least 5 seconds behind.
Being that I am not hearing impaired I just like captions on it’s difficult being that far behind.
It was so bad on that movie I just had to turn them off.

I bought a DVD of
Das Boot way back when DVD first came out. There were probably less than fifty titles on the shelf at Best Buy, that’s how new it was. Anyway, the subtitles are so badly timed that I can’t watch it unless I play the dubbed version.

bendableI watched three minute news story about A local Korean festival.
The whole time they had a subtitle underneath
the expert guest and the news girl that read

ThunTigerI’ve noticed that most subtitles on streaming services don’t accurately reflect the dialogue. There are either errors or omissions. They are usually for brevity. But, someone who relies on the subtitles is getting an abridged version of the story.
The anticipated reading comprehension level of the average viewer is probably being taken into account though.
TLDR; the words at the bottom of the screen are lazy and poster thinks people can’t read good

FredwardFox News has the worst closed captioning of them all. Many of the CBS shows do partial captioning-they'll leave a lot of dialogue out. It's frustrating to struggle between the electronic tools (hearing aids, etc) and the captioning. It has reduced my tv watching. I'm probably better off for it.

Perhaps. Most news articles are written on eighth grade level and people complain when it is above this level. Those folks are probably stunned when they hear George Will. I myself prefer intelligent writing. I think the term is turn a phrase.
