Trouble justifying $1,000
I need to replace the ceiling fan on our back deck. Been warm enough here a few days to spend some time out there.
The fan out there is likely as old as the house. We have been here 11 years and it was already here and was quite weathered. But it spun when a turned it on and made no real noise nor did it shake all about so no need to fool with it.
Well now when it spins it grinds and grinds as it goes around.

I really would like a Haiku made by Big Ass Fans. They are a good looking fan, made in the USA, right here in the City I live in, and they are whisper quiet, damn near silent.
But they are $1,000. They were kind enough to send me a 10% off code so now we're a bit over $900 after tax.
Then there is just the no frills ceiling fan mad win China for around $100.
Can I afford it sure but that extra $800 is a couple extra car payments, most of the boy's club soccer fees, the list goes on.

Even if it were like $500 I could justify that but $1,000 I just can't do even though I would like to.

I've run into similar issues, even with BAF. I don't mind paying for quality, but DAMN, I can only afford so much!

I paid 300 for a Hunter fan. I do not use it that much but it is attractive. How many blades and what are they made of? I bought mine at a panama fan store. I would pay extra for a speed queen and reliable a/c.

Does the big ass fan work on 440v, 220v, or regular house current?

You may need to factor an electrician depending on what model of BAF you are looking for.

I looked at the site 1700 for a ceiling fan. With their name I guess they are expecting BIG ASS profits.

The Haiku is their standard house ceiling fan so it is just a straight wire swap.
Easy peasy swap for my current fan.

They are really really good for horse barns as they move a ton of air but the speed and blades can be tuned that they will not stir up dust for the floor.

For those applications they are absolutely worth the price. However the home fans are very nice top notch quality, silent, and move a ton of air.
Worth the extra money? No, unless you have extra cash to spend because you want to.

For all problems that seem to come up nowadays, I search for youtube videos to see if there's an easy or inexpensive fix. Have you tried oiling the bearings in your current ceiling fan?

I used to help build motors for those; worked with the crew who developed that motor and drive. We had a half-dozen or so of the Element fans hanging up in the building. At a max 72 RPM, it’s truly amazing how much air gets moved. Cool

Box of Styrofoam peanuts too close? Haha, that’s going to be Styrofoam snow!

In general I’d rather do without than support China. I figure I have to practice what I preach. I fervently believe that we should stop buying from China completely, even if that means that we have to do without some things. I also think we buy too much junk anyway so maybe it would do us some good to buy less stuff. I wish we could make it too costly to just dispose of junk so people had to buy quality products. I’m not suggesting any particular course of action but I’d offer the consideration that in the long run a higher quality item might save you time and money. It’s at least something to think about.

We looked at them a few years ago, the price turned us off, too.
Want one of the more industrial style for my back porch. Maybe not a BAF, but something like it

We've had several in the past couple homes, yes they are expensive but oddly now and then, the Haiku base models will show up on Amazon discounted big time. Couple years ago grabbed a two at $499/ea.

Haiku, starting at $1,550: Assembled in USA

Haiku L, starting at $849: silent on this point

Neither are manufactured in the USA. This was not easy information to find which is my first clue that any product is not made in the USA. If a company is proud of where their products are made, they will tell you, a lot.

I have ceiling fans in nearly every room in the house. They're all Hunters and are quiet enough for any possible purpose other than possibly studio recording.

Paying $1000 to get a quieter fan? No way. I don't know what their target market is - maybe fashionistas?

I've been on that boat, ended up getting different fans, two for the patio for less but I like the BAF company, being from my hometown but yeah $1K for one fan. They are low production, it's not being cranked out of a factory in Guangzoui by adolescent children in slave factories that's why it's not $50.

Bought two Harbor Breeze 84 Inch fans, outdoor rated and they are very quiet and well balanced, move a ton of air without sounding like a radial engined WW2 fighter overhead...

I run 3 of these in the house. They go from light to helicopter. 2/3 have been running 10+ years at this point and the one I have in the MB, is on March to December.

Consider MINKA-AIRE brand as a step up from Harbor Breeze, Hampton, Hunter and other traditional brands but not to luxury price range of BAF.

They move a decent amount of air, are near silent, have good longevity and are in the $200-300ish range.

Had some in bedroom of last house, used them in replacement of outdoor fans, and used them throughout new construction of a home in 2024.

Perfect.

It's sad Hunter fans are no longer made in the USA. I usually buy them but for a while it seems, they no longer produce fans here.

Before I left my previous employer, I did hear that BAF had done the 'vertical integration' thing, and bought a motor company. All indications and assumptions were that the motor company was not American.
