Doing weekly grocery shopping, I picked up a breakfast burrito that was on sale. The wrapper showed a picture of what looked like a burrito filled scrambled eggs, cheese, and bacon. Looked good. Then, I read the wrapper. "Plant Based."

Yuck! I wouldn't intentionally buy it either.

I posted a few months back my jerky mix up. I'm a jerky fan and saw It's Jerky Y'All in the keto aisle so I bought it. It wasn't until I got home that I realized there was no meat in it, but in fairness it did say "plant-based jerky" in big letters on the label.

Whale is the most disgusting thing I've ever had in my mouth. It's Jerky Y'All is second most disgusting.

You may not realize how common Monocalcium Phosphate is... Wink

That's 1/2 of the ingredients in baking powder. The other half is the next ingredient listed: Sodium Bicarbonate (aka baking soda).

This means if you've ever eaten leavened baked goods that were made without yeast - including stuff like tortillas, pancakes, pies, cornbread, cookies, cakes, and quickbreads - you've eaten plenty of Monocalcium Phosphate.

It's a safe bet you've probably eaten Monocalcium Phosphate today. Big Grin

If V-Tail wants to make his own it's straight forward too.

    Ingredients:
  • 3 flour tortillas taco size
  • 3 eggs
  • 1/4 lb chorizo. I like the brand Chorizo de San Manuel. Also, acceptable to substitute 3 strips of bacon
  • Your favorite salsa
  • Your favorite shredded cheese. I typically use the shredded mexican blend (monterrey jack, cheddar, asadero, and queso quesadilla) from store.

    Instructions:
  • crack eggs and mix in bowl like you would for scrambled eggs
  • sautee the chorizo over medium heat until almost done
  • pour egg mixture over sausage
  • fold eggs and sausage in fry pan like you would for scrambled eggs
  • About 30 seconds before eggs are done put a healthy coating of shredded cheese over the egg & sausage mixture
  • Put 1/3 of egg, sausage, and cheese mixture over each tortilla
  • Put salsa on each tortilla
  • Fold each tortilla into a taco
  • Protect and enjoy

I'm all for vegetarian/vegan whatever you want to be. What I will never understand is the desire to make plants look and/or taste like meat... If you don't want to eat meat that's fine just eat vegetables and stuff.

Aw fuck. That's natural healthy right there. Hell, it's organic (chemistry) even. Eat up! 'S good fer ya even...

Well, better 'n eggs, bacon 'n toast with butter. Fuck, think of the fat and salt in that.

Better stay with that vegan stuff I say. Clearly safer and more nutritious.

Can't be too safe you know, your health is on the line.

Tator's recipe sounds OK, but it doesn't have any of the Good Stuff listed in the original post.

I love breakfast burritos-had one yesterday. But plant-based is not a phrase that exists in my grocery cart.

I shop at Publix and have never seen such a thing there, though it may be that I simply missed it.

Certainly not gonna look for it.

Now hold on. The best burrito I have EVER had was a total plant based burrito from a Vegetarian mexican food shop in my old home town. Now, 6-hours moved away, I sometimes daydream about going back just for a burrito.

Sometimes you had to call in an order and pick it up an hour later they were so busy. There really is a market for the plant based food and in this little mom and pop shop, everything was excellent.

Sure I still eat bacon and carne burritos but that Vegy plant based burrito was delicious.

I would just say try and maybe you'll be surprised.

I'm all for eating plants, but when they try to make it taste like meat all the chemicals they use make it unhealthy.

Publix is where I saw it. Actually put it in my cart, then took a closer look and put it back.

What was the salt content in it?

My Son-in-law likes the burrito concept, but isn't too fond of tortillas. He uses all kinds of good stuff like tatortodd mentions on a pile of rice and digs in.
