Despite lawsuits auto Mfgs STILL use two piece lug nuts!
Amazing...

This rant brought on by me after just having to do a Brake job on my Daughters 2017 Infinity QX60.

I have dealt with these things before, replacing them when I run across them on my families or friends cars that I happen to work on.

Who ever invented them needs an ass beating...
every day...
for a month...
before breakfast.

It isn't just one Mfg either, it is most of them.
If they can't get a simple lug nut right how can one trust them to get ANYTHING right????

Only one was actually f'd up this time... But as usual I'm off to order a whole set...

If the nuts aren't too badly swollen, there are sockets that are half a millimeter larger (e.g., 19.5, 21.5, 22.5) that may be of some help. If I'm doing any job on a vehicle that requires lug nuts to be taken off and I find them fouled up, I either don't let it leave without new nuts, or refuse it altogether. I have no more patience with this crap. It took me nearly an hour to remove 24 nuts from a Ford F-150 once.

I remember those back in the '80s, but didn't think anybody used the cheap junk in '17.

Wonder what else Infinity has been skimping out on...

I despise these with a passion.
Ford and Toyota both still use them in their trucks.
I replace them immediately.

I always replace with McGard lug nuts when I can. Gorilla are my 2nd choice.

Yea, right! But it is not just Infinity.

According to google...

Dodge’s have a lot of swollen lug nuts Magnums, Rams, Darts, Chargers etc.

Ford’s are notoriously bad from 2010-2015+ or so including the model’s Fusion, Escape, Flex, Focus, F-150, Mustangs, and F-350 trucks. Some new Fords STILL use them.

Jeep

Chrysler

US built Toyotas.

Chevy’s

Some Honda’s have had this problem.

Will have to keep this in mind when our Expedition & Explorer are due for their first rotation.
I do recall our Flex being a bit wonky, never put it together that this could be the issue.

I know nothing about this 2-piece vs 1-piece deal, until this thread. So, please explain to me why some folks are still shilling for 2-piece lug nuts.

I think because they’re a cheap way to make a shiny “chrome” lug nut.

A 1 piece lug nut is self explanatory. A 2 piece lug nut is a cheap undersized 1 piece lug nut with a thin decorative sheet metal cover bonded to it it. After you loosen/ tighten them a few times, the cheap cover starts to either deform or break off entirely resulting in lug nuts that can be very difficult to remove or torque properly if you put them back on.

The reason people (and manufacturers) still use them is that they're cheap. Cheap 1 piece lug nuts are ugly, and good looking 1 piece lug nuts are quite a bit more expensive. Pretty 2 piece lugs cost pretty much the same as the cheap 1 piece lugs, so manufacturers use them knowing it will be somebody else's problem by the time they start to cause issues.

"The people hate the lizards and the lizards rule the people."
"Odd," said Arthur, "I thought you said it was a democracy."
"I did," said Ford, "it is."
"So," said Arthur, hoping he wasn't sounding ridiculously obtuse, "why don't the people get rid of the lizards?"
"It honestly doesn't occur to them. They've all got the vote, so they all pretty much assume that the government they've voted in more or less approximates the government they want."
"You mean they actually vote for the lizards."
"Oh yes," said Ford with a shrug, "of course."
"But," said Arthur, going for the big one again, "why?"
"Because if they didn't vote for a lizard, then the wrong lizard might get in."

I need to replace my Sienna lug nuts with something solid. Those tinny end caps gave up and deformed after the garage mounted new tires and put double torque to them. Absolute monsters to break loose. I bought the correct impact socket which required driving on with a small sledge hammer. I wont pay $100.00 for a set.

So, is there such a thing as high quality 2-piece lug nut? Or, that's just an oxymoron?

This happened to me on my 2019 F150, happened to my dad too. I ordered replacement lugnuts from https://www.cjponyparts.com/ they had the double chromed one piece lugnuts (gorilla) and shipped within a few days from CA…I tested them and then sent a set to my day in NC.

I was pissed, cause I had (iirc) one on a back tire and there was no way I’d have been able to change it on the side of the road.

None that I have found, it is just an inherently bad design.
If they never see an impact wrench they will be fine. Any shop you go to is going to use an impact, so there is that.

There are lawsuits? How much do people think they're going to get for 16, 20 or 24 lug nuts?

There was a class action lawsuit against Ford among others. Does it have to be about the money... some are citing it is a safety issue.

But it's not just the cost of the lug nuts. The cost of repair can add up. And the effect of being stuck somewhere, or your wife somewhere, perhaps at night or in the rain etc with a flat tire that can not be removed, even by a wrecker tech.

I have a relative that had to have his wheel cut off in pieces when his failed... had to find a replacement junkyard wheel and replace all the lug bolts and nuts as well.

Here is a site with some pics that explain how these were created by satan to fuck with mechanics the world over.

Yet another set...

Dang, another Daughter brought her 2012 GMC Terrain over, making noise in the front. Needs front brakes... OK easy peasy...

I take off the wheels and notice the lug nut socket fits real tight... That can be a symptom of two piece ones going bad. They can swell due to corrosion between the outer layer and the actual nut.

I inspect the lug nuts and find couple split outer covers.
So, I need 20 more new ones, just a different size.

And yes, I always use a 6 point dedicated lug nut socket set and torque by hand.

Several times I've had to hammer a slightly smaller socket on a screwed up 2 piece. It was the only way to get them off. If you rotate your tires several times a year and use an impact wrench, you'll be lucky to get to 3yrs before the nuts are ruined.
