Have an alternate method of cooking

lizardman_uHave an alternate method of cooking
Living in the NE Oregon desert an open fire won't always work for cooking due to the winds.
So I have a fire pit with the center that raises in two inch increments and pivots for cooking when there isn't wind, and I have a wood burning offset smoker to use if it is windy.
With the smoker I can build a fire in the cook chamber to shield the fire from wind, and cook using wood or coal.
Yes I have to keep wood on hand.
Another method is a white gas or propane stove, and again you have to keep fuel on hand.
We have had power outages due to storms that lasted for days, and I can always cook.
I also can boil water using a wood fire as the heat source under the stock pot using the smoker or fire pit.

reflex/deflex 64A Camp Chef stove and a bulk type bottle will make for a proper stove. Look to the outfitter type not the tin tailgate Coleman stove style. The Coleman style do serve though.

HRKhave the Big Red Egg and plenty of lump charcoal, also a Solo Stove, it can burn wood, and I'd have to order the cooking plate for it, there are several campground cooking options for the solo.

GustoferI have a woodstove in the house that I can cook on top of if need be. Also have the Egg for baking if need be, and a propane fired griddle with plenty of back up gas. Worst case scenario? I am adept at campfire cooking.
My kitchen stove is propane as well, so while none of the electronics will work, it'll still fire up.

SundoThe ultimate fire-safe cooking device is the Gosun brand solar ovens. The cooking compartment is enclosed in a durable coated glass material that lets sunlight in, converts it to heat, and has an insulating effect to keep the heat inside. Fold-out parabolic mirror panels gather the sunlight and concentrate it on the cooking compartment.
Obviously, this will work better in sunny Summer days than in cloudy Winter days.
However, if your concern is to avoid igniting a wildfire in the dry Summer of Eastern Oregon, I can’t think of a better solution.

Mrs BB61 and I have a solar oven. You should practice before you really need to use it. But they work surprisingly well. We have a Sun Oven brand which has a more conventional layout than the GoSun. We also have thought about getting a Lazy Susan to make it easier to keep it facing towards the sun. A wheel barrow works too.

mark60I always have charcoal for the charcoal grill, two propane tanks for the pizza oven and flattop, and pellets for the small solo campstove.

WaterburyBobI have cinder blocks, a grill grate, and plenty of dead wood in the woods out back.
Also have two sizes of pots made for use over a flame.
If I run out of propane (I usually have 2-3 full spare tanks on hand) I can cook with wood.
I like the idea of the solar oven; will that work in the weaker sunlight of winter?

Worst case. I'm just camping. Fire up the white gas whisperlight or Svea123 and cook bacon and eggs. Also rig up the solar generator to keep the refrigerator going. Picked up a Plana portable gas stove than runs off Gas One Butane bottles at a thrift store. Coffee in a Moka pot would be my highest priority

HRKForgot to mention we have a LP cooktop, and 120 gallon LP tank, so without electricity a match will light any burner, with the generator running that's not an issue.

Captain MorganDuring one of the superstorms here on the east coast our power went out for almost a week. Since we couldn't use our electric stove we used our wood burning stove to cook.
I did bring in extra wood so it wouldn't get wet. We did have our camping gear that we were using but the wood stove was our primary.
