Here is Chuck, the best dog I've ever had. Chuck is just a few weeks away from the Rainbow Bridge. He has Lymphoma and recently came out or remission.

I'm sorry to hear this Jeff. Did Chuck undergo chemo and if so, how long ago?

Thanks Pulicords, yes, Chuck had Chemo and it knocked the cancer down completely for 9 months after treatment. He had no ill effects and it was if he never had it.

Right at 9 months (a month ago) it flaired up again and he started another treatment that included oral chemo and steroids. This we were told could give him another 3 to 4 months. He is just a bag of bones now, down to 49 pounds. He is eating and acting normally at this point but he is dropping the weight. We were told he has 4 to 6 weeks left before the cancer effects his quality of life. As soon as we feel he is in any distress we'll send him over the bridge.

This really yanks on a guys emotions Jeff, really sorry to hear this. Kudos to you for doing the chemo treatments, many wouldn't.

Backing up in this thread, you'll see my Retriever Sydney and our little guy Rogan (King Cavalier). Sydney has brutal allergies and I mean brutal. It cost us 500.00 a month to keep her healthy and the payback for the unconditional love that she gives back, makes it worth every penny. Many ppl have stated we are crazy for doing it, but quite frankly, those people can fuck off and I hope they never own a pet. We're in it for the long haul.

Really sorry about Chuck man.

Jeff

No kidding eh. That was right after we got home from our little hunting trip. What a great companion. And little Rogan on the above photo, I think he's into the whole camo thing. "Hey!! Over here. I can see you, can you see me?" Big Grin

Thanks! I really appreciate it.

We got the gift of another 10 -12 months by doing Chemo. When he got sick, without treatment he would have ben gone in a week.

It wasn't easy but I didn't se where we had a choice. We have one in college and one going next year. His treatment has been about $4,500.00. Some would think we were nuts. Hell, I think we are nuts! I gladly sold my X5 to help pay for the treatment.

When I look at him, there is no question that for us, we did the right thing.

He truly is the best dog I've ever had.

Here's Darby, our Australian shepherd, doing her thing. She'll turn 5 November 1 and we'll be at an agility trial that day. I hope she earns a "Birthday Q". Big Grin

You certainly made the right decision about treating his cancer Jeff. While I'm sorry to hear about the return of his illness, adding just one more quality year to a dog's life is significant.

Our Puli had a fibrosarcoma in his chest. After surgery, the veterinary oncologist suggested radiation treatment and we spent about $6,000.00 even though Marley was eight years old at the time. Six weeks of treatments (five days a week) finished up six years ago this December. He's nearly 15 years old and really slowing down. The "Rainbow Bridge" would be in sight now (if he could see that well), but my wife and I will never regret the effort and cost involved in helping him when he needed it.

Take comfort in the thought that you did everything possible to help and provided him a year of love and happiness he and your family otherwise wouldn't have enjoyed. Please give Chuck a treat and a scratch behind the ear for me.

Sorry to hear about your pup Jeff. I've had to do it twice myself. It is always hard. Chuck looks like a great friend.

Here's my buddy, Sigmund Wilhelm born Thanksgiving Day 2007. His mom is a Weimaraner, his dad a Bluetick Coonhound. Sigmund means he's a "Victorious Protector" and Wilhelm means he's a "Brave Willed Warrior". He loves my 7 year old daughter like no other and sleeps with her every night.

Oh, and the best part, we call him "Sig" for short Smile

Here he is laying in the yard watching over Sarah and her friends playing.

My baby. She's a thoroughbred Rhodesian Ridgeback and in this picture, really not happy about being photographed.
