That's a great museum; only one of her kind in existence. I did have the chance go climb up inside both midships 5" directors the one time I visited her (the towers with the radar antenna on either side of the foremost funnel). They had the hatches open for some reason, and there weren't any "do not enter" signs there ( ), nor any volunteer workers nearby. It was really dirty and dusty in there, and a place that was clearly never intended for tourist travel, but that will likely be the only chance I would ever have to check out the inside of one of the directors. . .

That was 2010; seems she has a different paint scheme in your photo.

Somehow, regardless of actual capabilities, the modern variety is just nowhere near as awesome as they used to be. We had a blast today going through the USS Alabama and the USS Drum. My clothes still have that fuel-oil smell that seems to permeate everything on old ships. Just an awesome experience!

Wow, that boat has a lot of guns on it. I expect being earlier than the Iowas they may be 14" for the big ones. I can't believe a old school prop fighter could get within a mile of that thing.

Thanks for the pic of North Carolina. I have only seen that boat on Google Earth. You can zoom in on its deck pretty close.

The main guns of both the South Dakota Class (of which the Alabama was one) and the North Carolina class were the 16"/45 caliber mark 6 ("45 caliber" indicating that the barrel was 45 times as long as the bore diameter). The Iowas used the 16"/50 caliber mark 7 Gun. So all three classes had 16" main guns, but the Iowas had longer barrels.

I took a pic of a document detailing the cleaning of the 16" Gun bores...it was really interesting. When I get on my computer I'll post it up.

ETA: Here is the document, and a pic of the shells stores inside Alabama's #2 turret. According to Wikipedia, the mark 6 gun had to be relined or replaced after only 395 armor piercing rounds (although it could handle 2860 practice rounds)...and according to this document, there was quite a maintenance process before it reached that point. One thing's for sure, I will never complain about having to trim rifle brass again!

It was the first clear day we've had in ages and I took the opportunity to catch some rays in the yards. My wife applied the Norwegian Sun Screen on with a shovel to cover the sensitive parts...

Wouldn't want to get a sunburn!!

The light fell across my daily read just right. Had to take some photos of it.

I took this a while ago, but processed it far differently than back then now that I'm trying to learn to use photoshop rather than just lightroom. I'm not sure I like this result but I think I like it better than the originally processed one.
