Very nice.

Do you have any worries about the ghosting issues?

Been thinking about getting the 7D myself. I currently have the 40D and I love it. How much better do you like the 7 over the 30?

At first I thought this might have been a 1D Mk IV thread. I would have been pissed if it had!! Big Grin The 7D is nice. Talked to a couple guys at the Oceana Airshow. They seemed to really like them. Congrats on the purchase!!

IronGuy. The 30D is still available. If it doesn't sell at the end of the year I am going to use if for my back up until somebody wants it.

In terms of a "range report" I've been thinking of upgrading the 30D since the release of the 5DMKII, however that camera did not offer enough burst speed for shooting fast moving objects. (Including my son) A full frame camera that shoots HD Video would be awesome but I did not want to compromise on speed at the cost of $2,500.

When Canon released the 7D; 8FPS burst speed, dual processors, HD Video and 6400+ ISO.....it was a no brainer.

The 19AF Points and AI Servo are extremely fast with my 28-135 lens and even quicker with the 70-200L F2.8. This camera has bare bones settings such as your manual, apeture, and shutter speed settings. No portrait, night settings.

Even the burst speed is programmable so that you have the ability to blow through 8FPS on a subject or only have the camera burst with the AF locks onto your subject. I tested this on my son with every good results.

I'm going to get some great use out of this camera!

My new EOS 5D Mark II with some hardware attached:

Here's the 5D Mark II next to my old Digital Rebel XTi:

I sold the XTi and its kit lens to a coworker. I'm strictly a "full frame" DSLR user now!

BTW, when you buy a full frame DSLR boasting a 21 million pixel sensor, that new camera will absolutely expose any weaknesses in any "affordable" tripod you may be using. I had to do a bit of upgrading -to a Gitzo systematic tripod and Really Right Stuff ball head/clamp setup.

The little doohickey in the hot shoe is a double axis spirit level. It can come in handy if the camera body and/or a big lens is blocking overhead view of the spirit levels on the ball head's clamp and nodal slide.

The thing on the side of the camera is a Really Right Stuff quick release L-plate. You can mount the camera on the tripod in landscape and portrait orientations without having to use the ball head's 90 degree drop notch. It's great for stuff like panorama's since you can maximize the camera's pixel count in stitching together images. The L-plate is also good for attaching other accessories, like a flash bracket.

Looking good. I really think it's time to upgrade from my Rebel series of Canons to a professional series. I believe I've about pushed the Rebels to their limit.

Yeah, I've been considering picking one up. Nice camera!

The ghosting issues have been fixed in the latest firmware release.

I don't think it was even released yet when I posted. Smile

I was tempted to get one when I heard first about it. I have to keep telling myself it's not about the camera. Smile

True, it's not about the camera.

First it's about the light, the composition, the lens, eventually you get to the camera. But I have a Rebel 300D and it's getting a bit old. The autofocus sucks and the shutter lag drives me nuts.

What I really want is a Nikon D90, but I have just enough Canon glass that I can't justify the switch.

The 5D Mark II is one hell of an upgrade alternative. I had a love-hate relationship with my 24-70mm f/2.8L lens when it was paired with my Digital Rebel XTi. In the end I found out that lens was really only ever designed for "full frame" DSLR bodies. I get much better images from that lens with my 5D Mark II than I ever did from the old XTi.

The XTi body I was using was just a 10 megapixel camera. While the 5D Mark II has more than double the pixel count, its sensor pixels are still quite a bit larger and much more capable. That equates to noticeably better color and contrast quality, not to mention sharper images even at 100% pixel for pixel extraction comparisons. The 5D Mark II is freaking awesome.

If I was going to buy into the Nikon platform, I would bypass the D90 and step up to something better -like the D700. Like Canon's 5D Mark II, the D700 sports a full frame sensor. It may only be 12 million pixels, but the pixels are very big and cover the full area of 35mm oriented camera lenses, not some stupid 1.3 or 1.6 cropped center view of the lens. The color, contrast and image sharpness is all better.

The only Nikon body better than the D700 is the D3x. But you have to shell out nearly $8000 for that camera body.

At least on the Canon end, their $2700 body (the 5D Mark II) matches the 21 megapixel resolution of their top end body (the 1Ds Mark III). The 5D Mark II lacks a few key features, but has a more advanced and more sensitive sensor and sports 1080p HD video recording.

Thanks to activity revolving around the new Canon 7D body, Canon is working on an originally unplanned firmware update for the 5D Mark II to add 1080p/24 and 1080p/25 video shooting modes to its already acclaimed 1080p/30 capability. I think Canon became concerned too many camera buyers would pick a body costing $1000 less because it offered more HD recording modes than the $2700 model.

Dude... all I can say is NICE CAMERA!!! I too own a 5DMKII... but that there 7D is feature PACKED. 8 FPS, advanced everything, a pop-up flash that controls speedlights (drool), very respectable MP's, and a really nice expandable ISO. You did well man.

So what kind of lens will you be using as your walk around?? For my 1.6x 30D I loved the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8. But I really think that 7D deserves the Canon 17-55 f/2.8 IS EFS lens. But I could never bring myself to buy one.
