I'm labmike, a friend of rocker's. My name comes from a website I'm putting together, www.laboratorymike.com. I am a newbie with guns (will be getting my first pistol this month), so I'll stick with the strategy of staying quiet until I've read enough to understand what's going on.

To answer questions, my hometown is near Atlanta, and I've moved to central Iowa for grad school (goal is PhD in Chemical Engineering). I'm sure IA residents know which school it is.

Thanks to Sigmund for the IA Carry site. I went to a local sports store to look at pistols, and while talking to the guy about licences/permits, he told me about the sheriff's discretion and that this county is very tough for CCW permits. Most likely b/c of the university, which is "gun free" save for police. I can still purchase and use at home or ranges though, so I'll at least be able to train until we can change the laws to something more favorable.

As I said earlier, I have very little experience with guns (save for the Boy Scouts, whre I first got an interest), so I will have a lot of reading to do. Looks like an informative site.

Wise you are, my son. Owning a firearm is a big responsibility, carrying one is even more. I feel - make that felt- your pain about the permit. Your new county shows red on IowaCarry, and there’s not much you can do about it. On the bright side, look at our neighbors in (the People's Republik of) IL and WI, where there's NO CCW. Period.
