There wasn't much data on this powder/caliber combination but I did find the latest Accurate PDF v 3.3 on their website had #7 with 200 Lead RN with a range of 10.4 gr to 11.5 gr
My Lee Pro 1000 powder dispenser can drop 10.3 or 11.2. Feeling a little brave I made 10 rounds of LSWC 200 gr with 11.2 @ 1.25 OAL and went to the range to try them out. It's definitely up there as it felt much different than most ammo I shot out of my .45 and I noticed very minor primer flattening. Not much, but it's there. Now that you have 2 paragraphs of the backstory :P has anyone chronographed a similar load? Would you abandon this load or load up more ammo? I have some 185gr or 230gr Hornady XTP bullets I could use or...jsut use up the rest of the AA #7 in 9mm. ---------- Yes, as a matter of fact I do own a gun. I have used AA7 in the past but found there are several other powders that are better and cheaper. I've been loading 4.4 grs of Clays with 200 SWC and at the last 2 Area & Il. Sectional matches my load chronoed 172 PF.
Good luck.. T |

172PF for your Clays load or for AA7?
I know there are much better powders for .45 (I loaded 4.3gr of Clays until I ran out of it and didn't want to open a new jar) ---------- Yes, as a matter of fact I do own a gun. Free Classic P-Series Sig Armorer services on Long Island and around the NYC area. |

I posted this on another thread. Maybe it will help. I've found AA #7 flows like butter and is pretty useful. It's just hard for me to come by.
Not answering your question but... I've used 12 grains of AA #7 with 200 grain XTPs. It has been accurate and powerful in 1911, P220 and HK SOCOM. I don't think that this is considered +P load at 19,200 PSI (21,000 vs. 23,000+P) but it suits me for accuracy and power. At @1050 ft/sec with a 200 grain XTP it is not a "sleeper" either. I haven't tried working it up any higher, but I suppose their is room for experimentation. How about a successful criminal background check, credit check and IQ test for politicians? |

As others have said, there are better & MORE ECONOMICAL powders. Like only half that powder weight (5.4gr of W231 w/200 LSWC) is a very nice plinking load.
I HAVE used #7 in 45acp. it made a thunderous boom, and a GIGANTIC MUZZLE FLASH.....and it seemed to cycle the slide "faster" ....just made me feel like I was beating up my 220. IIR, I spoke to the head of AA and he told me that yes #7 will work, but the pressure isn't correct, thats why I was noticing little yellow kernel of powder residue. As it states on the can, that powder was expressly designed for 9mmNATO.....so I just use it for my 9mm loads. I am very fond of TiteGroup in my 45acp, along w/ HP38/W231....and AA#5. If you are looking to replicate the "feel" of a factory load....maybe go w/Unique I think that W231 is pretty gentle, and it was my standard. It worked well w/ Bear Creek 200SWC and 230RNL. ...........Then I tried some TiteGroup, and it TRULY lived up to its name, and used even less powder. I have also been wondering about Hodgdon's TrailBoss. I have yet to buy/load/shoot any, but its supposed to be ULTRA BULKY, so should be really good for 45Colt The powder is shaped like "cheerio's" |
