Finally got everything to start reloading .22 hornet and I tried to load a few rounds today. My seating die is screwed down on the press to where it just meets the shell holder at the top of the stroke. It is crushing the casings and barely seating the bullet (bullet can be removed with pliers). What am I doing incorrectly?

You do not necessarily need or want to screw the seating die all the way down against the shellholder.
The seating die has a crimp shoulder that is crushing the thin Hornet brass. Back the seating die well out, put a case in the shellholder, and run it up. Screw the seating die down until you can feel it contact the case mouth, then back it off 1/4 or 1/2 turn. Then adjust the seating plug for the bullet. |

It seems like your seating die is way too low. I'm using a different press, but it isn't anywhere near the shellplate when the press is raised. Put a case with a bullet sitting on it in the plate, raise the press all the way, then screw down the die until in touches the bullet. Lower the press and screw in the die a bit more. Repeat until the bullet is seated at the appropriate depth.

Jim,
I'll give that a try. If I find that the seating plug isn't seating the bullet deeply enough, is it ok to run the case back in after adjustment, or is it a one-time thing? Thanks for helping a newbie out. |

As long as you do not crimp you can still adjust the length. With the die backed off like they said, you will not be crimping the bullet. So adjust at will.

Thanks to all who responded. I'm reloading hornets like a pro now.

Put a resized case into your shell holder, raise the ram, and thread in your seating die until you feel it touch your shell holder.
Then back it off half a turn. Now adjust your bullet depth WAY out. After you have primed and charged a case, start seating the bullet until you have reached the overall length you want by progressively tightening your bullet depth setting. If your seating die is touching your shellholder it is set WAY too low. |

Igor,
I was using Hogdon Lil Gun powder, Sierra 40 gr soft point bullets, and CCI 400 small rifle primers. I stuck with the basic hornet load for my fist reloads. Guns don't kill people, Dads with pretty daughters do. |
