Do they bang it up as much as an H&K 91 or an FN FAL?

Thanks!

In short No they don't. They are very easy on brass. No deformed necks or body dents or longitudinal groves due to flutes or anything else except maybe a occasional nick on the brass. I have been loading the same 2000 cases for 20 years and once in a while I have to trim them. Due to their long life you have to watch for a shinny ring appearing around the head of the case which indicates the brass has stretched to much and should be discarded.

Thanks samnev. I have several hundred rounds of ,308 that I just don't shoot in my PTR-91 because I don't want to bang it up and I don't want to pay the price of new ammo. I'm seriously thinking of selling it and buying an M14 semi-auto or an AR-10 so I can reload.

All semis ding the brass to some degree. I don't think anything is worse than an HK. W/O the attachment to cushion the ejected case, it would almost fold cases in hlaf (exagerating). My M1 & M1A are much nicer to the fired case as tehy come out the top not side.

BB61,
I think you would be very happy with either of the rifles you mentioned. If you decide on an an M1A I'd look for a good used early one. I own several M1A's and am not crazy about the fit and finish of my latest a SOCOM II especially in the chamber area. Had to send it back twice because of a rough chamber that would stick cases. Still not happy with the chamber finish but at least it works now. The older ones chambers were like mirrors.

I agree about getting an older M1A in good shape. Even a "standard" is great and NM parts can be added as cash allows. Unitize the gas system and bed the thing or get one of the new superstocks that don't require the glass and you will be set.

On topic. My M1As are hardest on the softer brass, one of the reasons I like IMI or LC brass but on none of them is it really excessive. They are not as hard on brass as Machine guns.

I shoot a FAL, and ran about 100rds though it. And then reloaded them with no problems.

A M-14 will not hurt brass.

FYI There is a hell of a wait for Springfield M-1A's. I want one bad.

There may be a long wait but inspect carefully before yoy take possesion. My chamber problem was not an isolated case. 2 others in my shooting circle had similar problem with failures to function and had to send the rifle back for service. Hence my comment look for a good early one.

Smith Enterpises of Tempe , AZ used to make a quality M1a. Don't know if they still make them. If you could find a Smith or as I said an early Springfield especially serial # 3000 or lower which were Devine, Texas built guns and were built with all GI parts (before current Genesco owners took over) you would have a quality M1A even the early ( I started noticing marked decline starting after serial numbers passed 80k or so as they ran out of GI parts) Genesco rifles were good quality. The Devine, Texas guns bring a big premium as do the Smith's but well worth it in my opinion if you can find either one. I have seen them for sale from time to time on various boards.
By the way what does LBR mean?

No. My SAI is very gentle on the brass. The PTR91 and FAL brass goes into the scrap bucket.

All the brass that comes out of my FAL gets reloaded. What type of FAL do you have ?

if you can, mic your spent brass and see what kind of headspace you are getting. I have 1 thou crush atm, makes life easier when it comes to reloading.

I would not recommend using a Precision Mic to set headspace on an M1A. Brass for M1's and M1A's should be resized back to "0" because the bolt may not fully seat especially if you are single loading. This can cause casehead separations and possible damage to you are the gun.
