Thanks guys. Sounds like the 231 I use for .45 will be a decent place to start.

Win WSF. I use 5.2gr under a Hornady 115gr XTP. 1.130" COAL.

I think you're gonna find 231 is too fast for that bullet weight. 231 is a good powder for the lighter bullets; That's all I used to use for my 115gr plinking loads --I've since switched to zip as I feel it's a little cleaner. If you're trying to keep muzzle flash down I think I'd stick w/ something that's medium burning for 9mm such as Unique or Universal Clays. I think you'd have better luck using a slower burner like AA#7 to achieve higher velocities but this may produce more muzzle flash than you're looking for.

231 is good for 115gr or lower. The WSF is a better choice for loads with the heavier bullets weights.

Accurate #7 or Vihtavuori 3N37 for 147gr bullets in 9mm. Don't use W231 - you need a slower powder for heavier bullets.

VV 3N37 is the cleanest-shooting powder I've ever come across. It's somewhat expensive however.

4.9 grains of 231 with any good 115 jacketed bullet is a good load for accuracy.Accuracy is the goal. Will

Not really, just depends on what vel. level you are comfortable with. Using 3.5gr of W231/HP38 under a 147grLTC gives 940fps. That is max, I would drop that 5% & work up, but it's safe in m GLock w/ LW bbl. W231 is certainly safe w/ 147gr bullets as long as you aren't pushing for 1000fps.
FWIW, Lymna says 3.5gr-4.1gr w/ a 147grJTC.

Will he be better off accuracy/consistency wise to use a powder that comes closer to filling the case? It seems like 3.5gr of 231 would only fill about 1/3 of it. It could just be my luck, but it seems like when I use powder that only fills a small part of the case I end up with some erratic results.

I've been using W231 for the 115gr and I just tried Power Pistol for my 124gr loads.
The W231 makes for nice plinking loads that are pretty accurate, but I don't load near max so velocity is pretty low >950ft/s
The Power Pistol should produce better velocity, but not sure about the muzzle flash yet.

I picked up a new 8 lb can of Hercules Red Dot for next to nothing ($10) and I'm considering working up a load for that powder since I have so much of it. Estate sale and it was still sealed.

If guns cause crime, mine must all be defective...

Winchester Super Field (WSF) is the way to go. It burns cleaner than 231 and is available everywhere. I use it for 9mm (any bullet weight) 45 acp, 38 Super and 40 S&W. If I still shot 10mm, I'd use it for that too. Try some, you might like it.

I have gotten phenomenal accuracy using Red Dot (who would have guessed) powder and 115 gr. bullets. 4.2 gr. and 1.125" OAL will give me one hole groups at 11 yds. The load fills the case nearly to the top.

Lee load data has this load range from 4.3 - 4.7Gr. I started at 4.2gr. and never saw the need to change it.

I just started using Auto Comp by Winchester. It is the best powder I have found yet. Cleanest powder I have EVER shot! Accurate as well. It's all I'm using from now on for regular pressure loads.

The bigger the hole, the harder they squirt!

To cover all bases, make it Power Pistol. Works well for me with jacketed and cast, sedate to max loadings, is clean, meters well, accurate results, not spikey with regard to pressure, nice load density... Works damn well in my experience with 38 Special (+P loadings), and .45 Auto using any bullet I have tried.

Also Love Unique and WW 231 in 9mm as well.

I was using Power Pistol until it was no longer available around here. I have since gone to WSF with very good results and nice accuracy.

No, I don't find powder position in small cases like 9mm does anything for accuracy. Many guys use TG, which occupies even less volumn (not my fav btw), W231 wokrs fine for all the bullet wts as long as you don't want max. vel. loads, then switch to WSF or Unique. PP is ok, just too much muzzle blast for me.

I'm using Hodgdon's Universal because it's what I have been using for 45acp and 38 spl and I have plenty around. I've used Universal for about 3 years now and am very happy with it.
