I was browsing Berry's for some .380 bullets and was reminded of something I never found out.
What is the difference between the flat bottom (FB) and hollow bottom (HB) bullets? Besides the obvious. --- Grayguns P226R .357SIG -- P226 W.German -- 590A1 -- M4gery -- Ruger Mark III --- -- Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past me I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain. -- |

Hollow bottom can serve two purposes. One is to have a lighter bullet with the same external dimensions (aside from the bottom) and profile as a heavier one, and the second reason is to allow the bullets base to expand, and fill the grooves better due to groove variance; think Minié ball. Any expansion is obviously dictated by the pressure of the round, and design/material of the bullet.

The 2 bullets they had for sale with this option were the same weight.

The hollow base alos gives you greater case volumn. If yo ugo w/ them, you'll need a bit more powder to get sim vel./pressure as solid base bullets.
IF YOU AREN'T HANDLOADING, YOU AREN'T SHOOTING ENOUGH! |

+1 And to add to this a bit, expanding and filling the grooves can help prevent leading. This is why flat base bullets often perform better in revolvers than bevel based bullets do, esepcially with hard alloys and low pressure loads. The sharp edge of the flat base bullet is more easily deformed than a bevel. |

Good question. One i had as well.
So re loaders. If you were loading a 9mm practice round, which would you choose? Flat or hollow? Kevin Karma? Karma is just justice without the satisfaction. |

In Berry's, assuming they are plated, I would prefer Flat Base, Round Nose. Higher velocity with the same powder charge. I will also tell you from experience that finding load data for Berry's bullets is next to impossible. I have had the best luck finding loads that would cross reference for the 115 grain RN DS bullets. Had to develop my own loads for the FP and HP rounds. Time consuming when you have to drive 30 minutes one way to shoot. |
