Reloading Inventory app discussion
Can you add cost?

Reason i ask, when i buy components i mark them with date bought, price paid, and date opened (especially the powder).

In theory I could, yes, but the problem with that is then that if you bought 2 boxes of bullets from 2 different stores and paid 2 different prices, they would then show up as two separate entries in your inventory since the costs would be unique. I'm not sure that would be something people would want to see. It's bad enough that multiple lot numbers show up as distinct entries, I couldn't imagine trying to add all these other unique fields like cost and date opened and date purchased and soforth.

I don't understand people who keep track of what they paid for something they already own, to be honest. To me, the only thing that matters is the replacement cost.

I do have some ideas for v2 though.

I'm planning to add an ammo inventory, as well as a loads database.

So, you would enter all your load data for your rounds, and then you sit down at your reloading bench and crank off 500 rounds of 9mm. When you're finished, you change your inventory of loaded 9mm to 500, and it automatically deducts that amount of powder, and that number of primers and bullets that you specified for that load, and 500 9mm cases.

For me the reason is the relationship between past about paid and currently offered price. For example:

Say i bought powder X for $25/lb then abit later i find it for $20/lb. I have decreased the cost per pound of powder X by $2.50 and i know with a few thumb strokes $20 is a void deal.

The opposite might be true when paying $30/lb for powder Y last year and finding the lowest price around is $250 for 8 pounds. An increase of $1.25/lb over the past year might be acceptable.

Then you find powder Z for $34. You recall having bought some a few months ago but can't remember what the coat was until referring to the handy dandy app and see it cost $24/lb three months ago.

Maybe I'm just to anal about data mining.

I like that. Is there anyway you could create an accompanying app for the range when testing the loads?

There would likely be a market for those two apps.

I'll address your two posts separately.

For this one, that does make a certain amount a sense, and it is something that I consider when buying powder. However, once again, if I bought it last year for $20 a pound, and this year, I Can only find it for $25 a pound, how important is it that I paid $20 a pound last year? My choices are to pay $25 a pound, or to not buy any. If I don't buy any, then I run out. If I run out, then I can't reload, and I can't shoot.

The more important relationship to me is between the price that I'm currently looking at and the rest of the prices from available sellers. When I make a purchase, I'm trying to get the best price that I can at that particular point in time, not beat a price that may be from pre-SandyHook that will never be seen again.

However, simply because this particular piece of information isn't one that would be of value to me doesn't mean it would be of value to other people. It's not that I'm unwilling to add it, because it honestly wouldn't be TERRIBLY difficult, perhaps a few hours of coding I would think, and an update to the database (which I need to learn how to do once the app has been deployed anyway), so..

Let's say that I'll add it. I'm not entirely sure how the logistics behind the scenes would work. Especially given the planned feature add for v2.

Currently, if you add 8# of H4350 with lot number 123, and then another 8# of H4350 with lot number 124, when you view your powder inventory, these show as two distinct entries. Dealing with this will be problematic enough when trying to handle automatic inventory deduction, since you'll have to properly choose which lot number of powder you were using for that load (same for primer and bullets).

But if there was now yet another differentiating factor between items, now you would have to correctly pick both lot number AND price (I mean, the reality of it is that you would like never have two powders from the same lot number with different prices - they would have been bought from the same source at the same price most likely, but I digress).

If this is simply information you want to keep track of, however, and not have the app take any action on (like calculating per-round cost, etc), there is a free-form EditText field labeled "Description" on each item. You can enter anything you like there - date of purchase, cost, etc. Would that suffice to meet your needs, or is there something else that you and others might want to happen with this data?

Now that I've learned how to do this, I don't want to say "The sky's the limit", but within reason, sure I probably could.

What would you want said app to do? What would you need to enter, and how would you want it displayed?

I'm guessing you would want to enter things like "Caliber, bullet, primer, brass, powder, charge weight, seating depth", and then for each of those you'd want to enter what, like number of shots and size of group and maybe muzzle velocity, or something like that? Maybe ES and SD as well?

I would say yes to the info but info selected. (Ie, select load #22 which is the 22nd load entered into the system). Maybe include range info such as date, temp, wind, distance, etc.

The load is selected and three or four concentric circles become available where the user can finger touch and a depiction of where the shot landed appears.

To summarize;

The user builds up X number of loads entering each into the app.
At the range, user selects which load is being shot adding and saving applicable range data.
After each shot, user touches screen where shot lands; maybe ability to reposition shot for accurate depiction.
A few lines for user notes.

Hrmm.. Now you're talking about working with graphics. That would be a new challenge, not sure how to do that just yet. Also, not everyone uses circle targets, so you'd have to have a way to enter targets, probably like take a photo or something. At the present moment, that is all outside my skillset, but I'll keep it in the back of my mind.

Any feedback on my other response to your want for cost in the app?

# of powders: No clue

# of bullets: Reeeeally no clue

primers: 7 brands, every size

calibers loaded for: Last time I counted, a few years ago it was 47? Could be up or down from that now, things come and go.

ETA: Bored and curious at lunchtime, I made a list, at least of what I can remember. I come up with sixty two different calipers in total that I've loaded for at some point. One of those I'm set up to load, have everything, but don't think I ever actually have. Lol
Two I'm still set up to load, but recently sold the guns, so those don't really count. (I can make ammo, just can't shoot it) Wink
And eight others that I did at one time but no longer do.

I'm sure at some point in the next day or two I'll think of one I missed.

I've been monkeying around with an app to do load tracking plus recording group and chrono results for each load, but I always seem to get bored with it and drop it again. It's for a real computer though, not a phone. I hadn't figured on doing any graphics in it, but providing a panel for the user to enter the data manually (which you'd have to do for chrono data anyway, unless you have one of those newfangled chronos that you can download data from).

Mentally, I've toyed around with that idea several times.

Problem is, I really have no desire to keep track of all the loads that did NOT work, so I always come back to "what's the point?". I just want to know the loads that work, so that when I need more of them I can go look them up and make more of them. Big Grin
